Heavy Duty, Designed Well
I have a 9' "double door" style gate on my side yard. The guys who built the gate installed a standard latch, which would be fine for a single gate, but I was worried that it wouldn't stand up to the winds and being slammed by my kids. I looked at my local big box hardware store, but couldn't find anything I liked. Found this latch, and it fits the bill. The components are all beefy, and I'm giving bonus points because it came with hex headed screws (install with a socket) rather than phillips head screws. Phillips heads are fine in some applications, but when I want to really control how tight something gets, hex heads are the way to go.Note for anyone following in my footsteps: if you need the handle to pass through to the "outside" side of the gate, you can take apart this latch with one bolt (and undo the spring). Then you just need to cut a slot in the wood, pass the handle through the slot, and install the bolt again. Works just fine.

Sturdy and Easy to Install After a Bit of Problem-Solving
I received the gate latch promptly and took it outside to my gate to see if it would fit. My gate is hinged on the left and opens out. It was a bit confusing because it looked like it would not fit the โrightโ way, e.g. attached so the handle is operated by pushing down. And the gate and post were too close together so the gate stuck on the latch. I gave up but decided to keep it. One week later I looked through the answers to customer questions and read that you simply flip the latch over making the operation of the handle a push up motion to open. Huh. I mounted the latch on the post side and then using a Japanese finishing saw, hammer and chisel I notched the board on the gate to fit the latch striker. I am not a skilled handy person but I AM a problem solver who perseveres. This was so easy, even for a senior citizen female using a drill that is too heavy for me!

Sturdy latch, great hardware, can mount for any orientation of door
This is an amazingly sturdy and versatile latch for the cost. Hardware is great, comes with self tapping socket head screws, so that was super helpful. The latch and bar can be oriented in 4 ways to accomodate any style door (hing on right or left, open in or open out). Mine is hinged on the left and opens out, which threw me for a loop as I didn't pay attention and had to reinstall. Once I got that sorted out, took 5 minutes. 10 bolts included allowed me to really tighten down the latch and bar as some hole locations lined up between 2 planks of wood and didn't really tighten.See pics for clearances. For reference, the latch is bolted up to a 4x4 with a fence plank on top, and the latch still clears perfectly. Also is lockable from either side. Great deal, would 100% buy again.

Made to last and works very well
We have a gate with a spring-loaded closure device. It had one of the typical cheaper, softer-metal latches that are commonplace. Half of the time, the gate would bounce back and not latch, leaving it slightly open. After re-closing the gate behind my kids, guests, and even myself for the seven-hundred-thousandth time, I went looking for a better option. This unit closes WITH AUTHORITY and captures the gate every single time. It is very well built and comes with the bolts for mounting it securely to the gate and post. That one worked so well, I bought one for my other gate too. One is on a wooden gate with a wooden post, the other is on a wooden gate with a vinyl post. They may seem pricey for a latch, but I don't think I'll ever have to replace these. Sturdy, hard steel, strong spring, and simple to use.

Heavy duty, but will it hold?
The latch is certainly heavy duty, which I needed because my old latch got bent and broken with the wind. However, it came with hex bolts instead of screws. I did not have a corresponding drill bit, but I was able to get it installed with a ratchet wrench. Still, the bolts did not attach tightly to my gate, so I don't know whether it will hold on a strong wind.

An excellent latch
We had a really bad latch come with our gate kit and I FINALLY decided on this one to replace it. It says it's for vinyl, but I attached it to metal and a 2x4 on a wooden gate. It worked perfectly, was a fast install. The self tapping screws wouldn't cut through metal though, so I had to pre-drill holes. Again, not using it as designed. It is reversible, which I didn't see advertised in the description. I just took out the main bolt, flipped it and switched the spring. This thing is SO much better than the old latch. It's burly. Highly recommended!
