Swamp Thing: The Complete Series (Blu-ray + Digital)

Mixed quality
Ah Swamp Thing, the big budget show for DCUniverse that got it's episode order cut down from 13 to 10 episodes without warning during production and was then cancelled after only the first episode. (The exact reason hasn't been stated but the buzz is that the higher-ups were either weren't confident in what they saw in the show, the high budget, a lack of financial oversight, or a mix of those options.) So was it fairly cancelled or or just unappreciated by the suits? Well, it's a little complicated. This show goes with a real southern gothic horror vibe to it and it pays off in spades. When it comes to the often swamp/bayou-themed monsters, the show is very impressive and could make you squirm. The effects are really good. (Though you can still tell this is a TV budget and not theatrical.)The set for the swamp looks great and has this otherworldly quality to it. I also like the look of the solitary swamp outpost sitting in the water. The outfit for the Swamp Thing is also impressively detailed. I like that they stuck with practical for him. Derek Mears, who's made a career of being monsters and villains, plays and voices the character and really gets to demonstrate his acting chops. He brings a real pathos to the haunted creature. Kevin Durand also does a great job as socially awkward, research-focused scientist Dr. Jason Woodrue.Given that the main villain of the Swamp Thing movies, the short-lived cartoon, and the 90's show was Dr. Anton Arcane, I liked that they held off on using him this season and gave other villains a chance to shine. The show also strives for southern gothic drama, and that part often didn't work for me. There are moments of impressiveness, but overall the show felt too soap opera-ey.Antagonist Avery Sutherland (Will Patton, the villain from The Postman) is too much of a caricature of a corrupt, southern rich guy. He should've been a recurring character instead of a regular. He has his moments, but he repeats his small stock of character traits too often and just becomes exhausting. When the action, horror, and sci-fi moments hit, this show is must-see TV. But when it comes to following the lives of the regular folks of the bayou-adjacent Town of San Marais, I found myself looking at my phone. In whole, I was generally entertained. I am disappointed that this show won't get a second chance to improve itself or answer a couple remaining plot threads, but it's not like I'll lose a lot of sleep over its absence either.

Ignore the positive reviews, seriously
Nasty trend of absolute garbage movies and shows having troll positive reviews trying to sell the product. Well I fell for it and bought this series. This is a mess of a show where the main story is a virus/outbreak series with swamp thing as a backstory. He is barely in it. It’s loaded with cheap jump scares. Swamp thing’s transformation is rushed and nothing spectacular. Where is his arch villain?Swamp thing was always awesome when it was creepy. They totally missed this by creating their own horror movie around the characters which never felt unique to the main characters. Swamp thing feels like they forgot the show was supposed to center on him instead of all the other filler mixed in.This show was a garbled mess. I was thoroughly disappointed at what could have been a great series. As far as I am concerned, the positive reviews where made by CW hacks angry they lost their jobs. YOU DESERVE TO! Every show you touch is lazy writing and garbage. This show was so uninspiring, dull, uninteresting and horribly written, I actually appreciated the bad return of swamp thing even more.I’m calling out the DC CW trolls who tricked me into thinking this was good.

WOW
Damn DC, you keep the crappiest superhero shows on TV like Legends of Tomorrow, and make GOLD like SwamThing only to cancel it after only 1 season... What's UP? This is awesome. Costumes, acting, special effects, editing, production, cast, all top notch. I am so saddened that there will not be a season 2.

A fantastic show cancelled way too soon!
DC cancelled this show after only the pilot episode had aired, for some reason. Luckily they finished filming the rest of the season. This show is fantastic; it makes no sense to me why they would cancel it. Much of the imagery is admittedly darker-in-tone, sort of horror-lite, you could say, so perhaps it was too dark to fit in with the rest of the DC tv-universe. But, don't let that push you away from checking it out. It's the best show they've made to date!

Great transaction, cool show, DC please do better
Transaction was great. Quick and as advertised. Thanks!Regarding the show, it’s not my favorite show ever but it’s pretty good. A lot better than I thought it was going to be. So my only question now is...can DC do anything right? I mean fine I guess I’m being a bit hyperbolic but they’re not exactly batting over .500. Most of their productions have been blahhhh (exceptions of course for Shazam and Wonder Woman) and they finally get a show right and then.......it’s gone. DC please step up your game. Work on your marketing (I never even knew this show existed until the Blu-ray release) and make things people want to see. And don’t cancel your good stuff. Please!

Great Thriller and Suspense!
I highly recommend the new Swamp Thing series. This and Doom Patrol were the real standouts from the DC Online Universe. It was well-written, a lot of heart, full of thrills and suspense. The effects are well-done and cinematography adds to the the creepiness of the show. Unfortunately production was suspended early, so the season was shortened. Everything still comes to a conclusion, albeit a little rushed. You really don't need to be a comic fan to enjoy as it fits right into the horror/thrillers that are popular in today's media. Perfect for binge watching. The CW is airing the show in the fall of 2020, but it may need so editing due to some of the horror/action scenes. Here's to hoping it gets picked up for a second season! This show deserves that! I am ready for the another season with the Swamp Thing.

Digital copy is disappointing
Digital copy is on Vudu. Should include a Movies Anywhere or ITunes option. Shouldn’t have to get yet another account to store my content

Even Swamp Thing couldnt beat the Accountants
Sad that this series was aborted like it was. Remain true to Len Wein`s and Alan Moore`s Swamp Thing. Good cast and special effects. Has a "body horror" vibe. Ending episodes are a bit rushed because of the behind the scenes situation but its great for the little we get.

The writing is awful.
I bought this dvd not having seen the show. The writing is not what Im used to as the stories were boring, filled with cliche characters who did unbelivable things.( Who in their right mind goes into a swamp at night in order to search for a "monster") However the cgi was in some way good, the whole thing is very forgetable.

Unsatisfying, but worth a look
By far the best live-action Swamp Thing so far, but that's not saying much. The character has a lot of potential that largely dates back to the innovative comic written by Alan Moore (reprinted as Saga of the Swamp Thing) in the 1980s.A few of those innovative elements are here and the makeup for Swamp Thing, performances (particularly Mears as old Swampy) and production values are all impressive. But in terms of the writing, what we're largely given here is a soap that goes for shock value with a rushed ending as it was cancelled and cut from 13 episodes to 10. I don't know if there wasn't time, but the effort to give it a satisfying ending appears to have been limited to rewriting the last five minutes to include some forward-looking dialogue. The way it worked out, the last couple of episodes go for fairly routine action and shock value. And fairly routine swearing doesn't serve much of a purpose except a heavy-handed attempt to be adult.Depending on the writing, the character can either fight like any other super hero or explore his connection to the planet and his startling new existence. This is an effort that was just getting started when sadly cut short, and people are still better to simply read the Alan Moore comic and stories by other writers.
