Degas - Small Statue - Little Dancer of Fourteen Years (1881)

I purchased the one on the right because of the good reviews but when I opened it i couldn’t move past how unlike the actual sculpture it was, the figure is too thin, from legs to face, and the head is not tilted high enough. I thought about adding my own material to the skirt but since the arms are attached to the skirt it would have been a problem in the back. I hesitated on this one because the the top was just a little to clean but omg the sculpt is so good. It looks so much like the one I saw in the museum down to the crack in the left arm plus the ribbon will be easy to replace if I wanted, I’d prefer satin, and the skirt could likely be replaced if you wanted, just like ones in the museum lol. Literally the only thing I could say that the one on the right has that’s better than this one is that it’s a heavier weight which makes it feel like it’s a better quality but I’m not so sure that the weight isn’t completely from the base.

I worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts, which had Degas' Little Dancer sculpture with the tulle skirt and ribbon in the hallway leading towards the main collections. I passed it everyday I worked there and loved it. I also fell in love with Rodin's Thinker which sat out front of the museum. Well, I already had a mini thinker in my library. When I saw this recreation of the little dancer, I was struck by how much it reminded me of the one at the DIA except it looks like a representation of how the sculpture probably looked a hundred years ago when it was new. What a great buy!
