An Excellent Resource For New And Old Fans Alike.
There have been a number of terrific Doctor Who companion books released over the past year in honor of the Time Lord's fiftieth anniversary on television as the longest running continuing sci-fi series ever. Older than Star Trek, Doctor Who ran continuously on the BBC from 1963 to 1989 and then returned briefly in 1996 for a British and American TV movie that was intended to be a possible back door pilot for more episodes. Depending on how much one enjoyed that film, it was either fortunately or unfortunately not the case and Doctor Who remained dormant for nearly another decade until acclaimed Writer and Producer Russell T. Davies successfully regenerated a new Doctor Who series in 2005 and the series has been continuing since. Davies is a huge fan of Doctor Who and I think during his tenure with the series he expanded the universe while showing great respect for the show's classic years by bringing back characters and in some cases even the original actor who played the character into the new series. As a result an entire industry of Doctor Who tie-in merchandise has flourished on both sides of the Atlantic and thus a need for various books for novices and super fans alike to keep track of everything has become almost compulsory rather than a luxury just as it has been with Star Trek.Written by Cameron K. McEwan, who is the creator of Blogtor Who, the most popular Doctor Who blog site online and a contributor to Den Of Geek, Cult Box and The Huffington Post, with illustrations by Andrew Skilleter, whose work been used across various media including the covers of magazines, DVDs, calendars and books, including his own Backlight: Doctor Who: The Art Of Andrew Skilleter, The Who's Who Of Doctor Who: A Whovian Guide To Friends, Foes, Villains, Monsters, and Companions To The Good Doctor is a worthy guide published by Race Point Publishing. While not exactly an encyclopedia, the book is an excellent reference resource to the details behind the initiate relationships between the various characters as well as a hard copy of their known back stories and where applicable interconnectivity within the Doctor Who Universe beginning with The First Doctor William Hartnell and just touching upon the new Doctor, who at the time of this writing, the episodes featuring Peter Capaldi as The Doctor have not yet aired in the U.S.The book breaks down the details into various entries based on character association to include distinctions between the companions, friends and allies, Time Lords and Ladies, villains, robots, aliens and monsters as well as The Doctors themselves of course. The entries are accompanied by a mixture of color and black and white photos as well as color and full page illustrations. The book is softcover, but is bound with a durable semigloss cardboard that appears to be multilayered and the binding appears to be strong with a rounded look one might find in a hardcover book and is approximately 240 pages. An excellent resource for old and new fans alike, The Who's Who Of Doctor Who: A Whovian Guide To Friends, Foes, Villans, Monsters, and Companions To The Good Doctor is available now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Race Point Publishing.(C) Copyright 2014 By Mark RiveraAll Rights Reserved

This is a must read for any Whovian!
My kids found this book at the library. We are new "Whovians" and are liking the current DR's(9-12). If you don't want to go back and watch all of the old DR. Whos, then this book is a good thing to read. It gives you a background on all of the Doctors, their companions and enemies throughout time. I liked it to piece together certain timelines and stories. This is a must read for any Whovian who wants to learn about specific details about the Dr. Who series.

Great effort. Great read
First off, I should make it clear that I'm pleased with this purchase. The detail is brilliant and I can see the author has spent a great deal of time and effort on the research and presentation here. The minor bug I have is that there is a couple of things missing from some sections. This doesn't negate the value of the book - it's still an encyclopedic volume of some distinction, but a little more research would have been great. Still highly recommended for fellow Whovians.

Nice book
My kids gave me this book as a gift recently. I found a few errors, but enjoyed it thoroughly. The chapter on the doctors' love interests was pretty good, with some background on the characters. I am getting another copy for a guy at my office, the number one Doctor Who fan I know. I have a feeling he's going to dig the Who's Who of Doctor Who.

Jaunt Through Gallifrey
I am by no means a Whovian. I am very late coming to the party or more rightly titled, The World of Doctor Who. This book is a remarkable compilation of information related to Doctor Who -- broken into various chapters dealing with: The Doctors, The Companions, Friends & Allies, Robots, TIme Lords & Ladies, Villains, Aliens & Monsters. It is a glorious collection of pictures and descriptions that will give anyone interested in the topic an understanding of the story and the evolution involved from Doctor to Doctor. While not directly related, the book also presents you with the evolution of technology as well as the story. The story moves from simple devices to more advanced special effects. I also love the index which cross references elements of the story. It really helps tie things together for the novice -- and for the long-time Whovian, it should be a glorious collection of Whovian history.

Essential reading - a tome whose time has come
This is a Doctor Who volume whose time has come (pun not intended). Being a bit of a Whovian, as well as a writer in the genre, I own some other recently-released reference works: the excellent Who-ology and the Doctor Who Character Encyclopaedia chief among them. These are excellent and definitive works, but the key thing is that - by their very nature - they're not readable. Yes, they're lovely to dip into or browse, but you can't digest the contents. And it's all just terribly confusing and a bit much. This is the big plus of Cameron K McEwan's seminal work: you can sit down and read it with a great deal of pleasure - no matter what your age or your level of knowledge. The author gives us a wonderful narrative of the story to date - something I've not seen anywhere else. In no time at all (stop me!) you get a start-to-finish overview of the entire series - the characters of the Doctor's incarnations, their companions, travels and adversaries. With over fifty years of storylines, things can get a little complex and hard to understand (even the BBC scriptwriters have had trouble remaining consistent within the storyline). Sure, if you need a definitive answer to a specific question, then Who-ology is terrific. But even if you're as old as me and have memories of cowering behind the sofa to Peter Troughton's adversaries (the second Doctor, to the uninitiated) then you're going have problems getting a proper feel for how the series - with its twelve incarnations of the Doctor, and a vast cast of companions and monsters - has unfolded.Read it for fun and clarity - you'll get more out of every episode you watch. (Afterthought - they should give this to the scriptwriters so that they don't keep tripping over the storyline...)
