Q: How thick is the mat? I am considering an Olive brand, which is 2" thick. But this one is on sale.

I don't think it is even 1 inch thick. It is just some fill or batting inside. My son lays this on top of the circle time carpet and doesn't complain. He originally had a 2" thick plastic mat, but it was too short. This is the only thing he uses, but I wouldn't suggest this on top of a hard surface!

Q: I'm looking for something for airplane travel, how small does it roll up? Can I carry this in a carry on without sacrificing allot of room??

It's small, but I don't think you're getting it inside your carry-on bag. It would be its own carry-on item that your child (2+) could easily walk on with and shove under the seat in front of him/her. It's very lite and my 3-year old easily carries it.
