Special needs
My 5.5 year old with mild cerebral palsy loves this toy and he wasn't really interested in being creative until now. I highly recommend this toy! Great OT practice! Not sure how to clean it though. Dog hair and other fuzz gets stuck.

Granddaughter Loves This
I got this for my Granddaughter for when she comes to visit she has something fun to do.Pros:Re-useableAll-in-One Case ProductHands-onNo MessHand-Eye CoordinationColor Matching#1 Parent-Recommended Brand For Creativity & LearningCons:Cords Get Snap Pulls EasilyWhat I received in the package:1 x Transparent Pattern Board Attached to Storage Case11 x Pre-Illustrated Pictures1 x White Background21 x 12” Cords in 7 Colors18 x 6” Cords in 6 Colors1 x Drawing ToolThis MELISSA & DOUG Rainbow Cord Picture & Pattern Maker product is roughly 12 1/2”x 10”x 1 1/2” and weighs approximately 1lb 13.2oz. It comes with 39 cords of two lengths of various colors. All the contents fit nicely inside of the case for storage. This product is for children 4-7 years of age. What I liked about this product is that it gives children minimal guides lines on how to develop their pictures much like a coloring book. You can choose to follow the color pattern and stay on the lines to develop hand-eye coordination and color recognition or you can free hand it a bit for fun. My Granddaughter used this for an hour or so at a time and it keeps her occupied. The simple pictures can be challenging but it helps her work on precision and how to correctly place the cord. For instance, she liked to start in the middle and then put the cord down each way. But most of the time she would end up with the cord long on one end and short on the other. So we had to talk through that challenge and she figured out that she needed to start at one end first. She also had a problem with some of the cords not covering the entire line in the picture. This we had to work out as well. She didn’t think about the cords being slightly elastic so you could pull it a bit to make it stretch to the length she needed. So inadvertently I used these as educational .. thinking out of the box .. lessons for her. The white screen backing is also fun for her. She goes to this often after doing a few pictures to create something of her own.If I had to post one negative, it is that the cords snag easily. This turned into a question after my Granddaughter’s first use of the product. She was upset because the cords were fraying and snagging and she didn’t like it. So she would get one that wasn’t frayed and use it. But once she took them off and did a few more pictures .. she eventually could not find a cord that did not have a fray or snag. I realize this is probably something that cannot be prevented but it does require me to answer her with something that I wasn’t prepared for. I didn’t really have a good answer except to tell her we can always make more when they are too frayed for her.I was not able to locate any warranty information either in the item description or product information.I received this product in exchange for an honest review. All in all, this is a well made educational tool that assists in a number of learning areas without the child knowing they are learning something. Love it.This product is made in China.

Limited playtime
My toddler and I would rank this activity as "kind of" fun. With only a few designs to choose from, and some "choose your own color" designs, it just isn't a favorite return toy. I suppose that's a good thing, because the velcro surface really tears up the strings, and if it was in heavy use, I think the strings would end up needing to be replaced. That said, the carrying case is brilliant, and it is nice to play with something low-tech and creative once in awhile.

Fun for toddler and up
This rainbow cord picture toy from Melissa and Doug is a lot of fun to throw in the mix of activities we need to keep our toddler busy. It is labeled for 4-7 yr old, so my 2.5 yr old test subject not being able to really make a picture out of it results in no deduction of rating on the product. It’s basically a bunch of thick colored cords cut in different length, and a case with see through slot to put pictures underneath, and a sticky top that the cords stick to. The closest I can think of for the surface is like a super strong velcro surface, so it’s teeth grab the cords and the cords do fray when pulled off. I think the manufacturer could reduce the stickiness to half and it would work fine without fraying the cords... It comes with a clear triangular contraption that you can stuff the cord into and use as “pen.” I tested it out and ever since my toddler saw me doing it, he has been trying to do the same. The completed turtle picture is by my husband. Didn’t realize he would enjoy it. 😄 You can also make it blank and free write, as in one of the photos, my toddler claims to be writing A B C’s. The cords can be stored in the toy, which opens up like a suitcase with a handle. It’s not possible, however to have it in there while playing with it, so we have it in a separate white container (that is not part of this toy.) My toddler did put the cord around his neck as well as chew it 😑 of course. Neither action resulted in any dangerous situation but I’m always supervising since these toys are not rated for very young toddlers.Overall, good mess free hand coordination toy.
