The piece that connects to the pole is plastic.

Q: Does this rake fit a standard aluminum pool pole?

NO it does not fit standard poles. Standard pole is 1 1/4” diam. This leaf rake is less than that. It wobbles in the pole and will most probably break if much pressure is applied.

Q: Is the mesh fine enough to skim small bugs off the top of the pool?

The mesh is fine and skims off bugs from the top of the pool as well as tiny leaf pieces from the bottom of the pool.
