The Mentalist: Season 3

Watched it several times
These is something in the Mentalist that makes me to view it again and again: great characters, intrigue, emotions... I even visited the "CBI Headquarter" building during my last trip to LA. I assume this makes me a fan of this movie.

THE MENTALIST: A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME...
Seasons I - IV should come complete with a notice from the Surgeon General's Office: "Warning. THE MENTALIST may be addictive to anyone unfamiliar with great television." "Well" (I hear you thinking), "maybe just ONE season." Fool not yourself, Gentle Viewer. Simply bite the bullet and buy all four. Today. Right now. For one thing, they are a joy to watch sans commercials. I'm sure those who've managed to find their way here unaided know enough about the cast and particulars to go on with, and they have probably already figured out that the show is stunningly brilliant. Yes, it is Sherlock Holmes in modern garb with a twist, but it is so much more. THE MENTALIST, in fact, lays almost every icon and cliché of the whole mystery/crime genre on its ear, and, in some cases, goes them one better. Just one "for instance" will suffice (half the fun is searching out the others): there are two variations (so far) on MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. In addition, there are elements from many and diverse television dramas of the past, from THE FUGITIVE and PERRY MASON to STAR TREK. Yes, STAR TREK (Kimball Cho as Spock?). Bruno Heller knows - as did Gene Roddenberry - that an audience needs a cast they can care about, which means a group of well developed characters who care about each other. I'm not sure Mr. Heller did all this on purpose, mind you, but the fact is that some of THE MENTALISTepisodes - to say nothing of the seasons themselves - have as many layers and contain as many traditions as the HARRY POTTER novels, including Jane Austen's penchant for misdirection, but it is certainly great fun thinking along those lines whether or not. And really, what more can we ask. The series IS great fun. Treat yourself and buy it. Watch it with friends who are unfamiliar and not yet addicted. You will NOT be sorry.

Greatest Series With a Disappointing End
I loved this series. The individual episode were usually great and clever. The "Red John" storyline was compelling the first few seasons - but it should have ended in season three, then segued into a separate "Tiger, Tiger" over-arching storyline. The meta-story lost its way after season three, even though individual episodes retained their flair, largely because of Simon Baker's witty flair as provocative Patrick Jane. Tim Kang's marvelous and understated Kimball Cho served as glue for the whole cast. The Red John storyline had become very ragged by the time the big reveal came - and Sheriff McAllister was NOT a credible candidate for the role. But the original character that Jane thought was Red John at the end of Sesaon Three should have been the guy and that storyline should have ended. That there was real chemistry between Patrick Jane and Robin Tunney's Teresa Lisbon character is undeniable. I don't know whether it was just not a genuine romantic chemistry or whether the romance in the seventh season was just handled sappily. But to suddenly make Lisbon into the equivalent of a giggly adolescent was jarring.Great series, but the writers did not think ahead about where they ultimately wanted to go with this - and so they ended up making it up as they went along after Season Three - and were often flying by the seat of their pants. This could have been done so much tighter.

Engaging, entertaining, well-paced, but DVD case was damaged
Echoing other reviewers, this series is engaging, entertaining, well-paced (generally), sometimes whimsical and rarely overly serious – in many ways a throwback to shows from the 1960-70’s. The basic premise: Simon Baker portrays Patrick Jane; a mentalist, con man and faux-psychic whose wife and daughter were murdered by a serial killer in retaliation for a perceived slight. To pursue the killer and exact revenge, Jane works as a consultant to the fictional California Bureau of Investigation, using his powers of observation, analysis and psychological manipulation to solve homicides. The CBI homicide team is comprised of a solid ensemble cast, led by Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), who has the thankless – and generally impossible - task of keeping Jane’s scams and ploys barely within the limits of the law.I’ve watched portions of The Mentalist on network television and I’m finally working through the entire series - in order - while indoor cycling. Season 3 introduces Special Agent J.J. LaRoche, head of Internal Affairs. Brilliantly played by Pruitt Taylor Vince, LaRoche is a recurring character in seasons 3 and 4; and makes return appearances in Seasons 5 and 6. What is it about the bosses in this show? Virgil Minelli, Sam Bosco, Madeleine Hightower and J.J. LaRoche are such compelling characters, rendered by amazing actors. Episode 3x18 (The Red Mile) is a personal favorite – surprisingly sentimental and insightful. Overall, a really entertaining package – well worth the price. While I really like this series, my 2-star deduction is intended to draw attention to the DVD. My DVD arrived with a knife cut through the UPC code on the outer sleeve and through the DVD case (see the attached image). The cut did not damage any of the discs, which work just fine. I was informed that certain distributors deface the UPC code so the DVD cannot be returned to a brick-and-mortar outlet. While this may not be the seller’s fault, I’m still not thrilled with the damaged case.

Wonderful
I watch very little TV but this ten yr old series has become one of my favorites. I'm rationing the episodes because I don't want it to end. Fortunately it went through seven seasons and I've bought them all. It's an ensemble cast, character development gets richer every season, and the writing and direction keeps pace. I've seen both The lead characters in other roles and these were both roles of a lifetime. Can't recommend all seasons highly enough.

The Mentalist - Season 3
I love the blend of drama and comedy in this show - very broad and appeals to everyone. Patrick is wonderfully amusing and Theresa is the perfect foil. The premise is very entertaining and heart-wrenching at the same time. The entire cast really pull it all together and make it come alive. You can watch one episode and enjoy it or watch the whole season and know the sub-plot and the character lines. Well written. The price is way better than retail and the shipping was fast and easy. Great Value - great product!

Great Show
The Mentalist is an awesome detective show to watch. It is about a man, Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) that found his wife and daughter murdered. Patrick ends up work for the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation) as a consultant. His tactics can be comical, but always solves the case. Patrick use to be a con artist prior to finding his family murdered. I recommend The Mentalist to everyone who loves detective shows with comic relief :)
