Q: Does it matter which way the dropper faces in regards to water flow direction?

Yes, it does. The red side plugs into the 1/4" line and the water comes out of the end w/o a stopper. If you plug the black side in, it's going to slid off the hose because there's no lip to hold it in.

Q: what does buried and "ported" mean particularly ported?

It means that you can bury the irrigation line, put the emitter in, and then use a 1/4” tube to attach to the emitter and bring the flow to the surface.

Q: Can they be disassembled in order to clean out large debris?

Actually they are so cheaply made they leak and the tops pop off. They are ultrasonically welded or epoxy didn't care to look. Junk though.
