Micro-hydro Design Manual: Guide to Small-scale Water Schemes
For anyone that is interested in the detail of designing a small (micro or mini) hydro-generation scheme this book is essential reading. It sets out in a clear manner the stages and calculations of how to undertake each element of design. Whilst it is a little out of date regarding the UK approach it still provides the information for background assessment.

AT LAST A COMPREHENSIVE SMALL SCALE HYDRO BOOK!
If you want to understand the practicalities of small scale hydro, the costs and what to factor in, what materials and their working lives, including their known problems/benefits. Site evaluation including practical power/flow and site measurenents, the basic civil engineering needed behind it. All this in plain English, to top it all, they threw in all the formulas (and answers), who says you can't speak English once you get a PhD. This book was clearly writtten for Engineers, but readable and understandable by all.

A great source of information
After searching a host of journals, and digging up other similar works such as the "Laymans Guide", most of what is out there for small hydropower seemed to be far too general. This book deals with the subject extremely pragmatically, leaving out the engineering textbook feel, and replacing it with a well-written, excellently illustrated, and easy to understand format. The book covers initial site surveying, civil works, economic aspects, turbines, governing, electrical, and drive systems as well as operation and maintenance and final commissioning and testing. Such a broad overview of micro hydro simply cannot be found elsewhere, and if you are looking for a book which deals with the subject completely, this is it. For those interested in solely the engineering design of hydroplants, and can read German, I recommend "Wasserkraftanlagen: Planung, Bau Und Betrieb" by Giesecke and Mosoyni.

well worth it
excellent book, useful for any project and well written, does not cover water wheels ( which I am doing ) but is still very useful for the fundamentals of governing, electricity generation, generators.. if anyone can recommend me a similar English book for the building of water wheels please leave a comment!
