A good introductory text
This is a pleasant, easy to read book that gives you 'at a glance' overviews for a vast range of self defeating behaviours. However, the introduction was a little sparse and doesn't really provide enough information on where self defeating behaviours come from or why they endure.I would say it is ideal as a self help book, but is not in depth enough for clinicians or those on a professional study course who will need more information.

Easy Read and a Brilliant Little Book
I'm a normal everyday person with a few complications in my life. I came across this book by accident and its a little gem. Each chapter is like a mini consultation with a trusted advisor. There are 40 chapters, each about 4 pages long so I make that 40 little lessons. Each chapter is stand alone so you don't have to read each chapter in sequence or in fact read all the chapters. I've read the chapters in a particular sequence helpful to me and not in the sequence they were written. I find one or two chapters a day is about the right pace to absorb and learn from the lesson. If you've ever wondered if it might just be you?....and not someone else...who is responsible for some of the complications in your life, then I recommend this book to you. This book has helped me to change the way I look at and deal with many things in my life. Quite simply one of the best books I have ever bought.

Insightful Writing Easy to Understand - Very Helpful
I picked up a few books on self-defeating behavior and attitudes. This one is by far the most helpful and relevant. While other books can go on and on describing wild self-defeating behaviors, this book nails the core of everyday problems in plain english. I like how clear the writing is, how well it summarizes our pitfalls - "Self-defeating behavior occurs when we fail to learn the lessons that life tries to teach us. It represents the victory of impulse over awareness, immediate gratification over lasting satisfaction, relief over resolution. Self-defeating behavior invariably begins as an attempt to make ourselves feel better. It is a coping mechanism. " There, the author encapsulates exactly what I've been going through and from which I try to break free. I love that the first chapter of the book is "Chasing After Love and Approval From a Parent". So many of our frustrations and regretful impulses stem from a longing for approval and love at home and the misunderstanding thereof. The author is a practicing psychiatrist, not just a researcher. His generalization seems grounded in years of observation and clinical experience. When he says "almost everyone I see in therapy has conflicts with a mother or a father, and these invariably affect their relationships with spouses, offsprings, colleagues and friends", it made me look inside myself in a new way. I'm very excited over the findings he's presented in the book. For example, I'd never relate procrastination to loneliness. I like how plain and clear the writing is, how easy it is to understand. I can relate to the sentiments described in the book well. It's very sympathetic. "Actually, unless you are the rare son or daughter who articulates your needs clearly, your parents probably don't even have a clue as to what you want from them. All they know is that you're displeased - and that bewilders and saddens them." I feel like talking to an old friend who knows exactly how I feel. It made me develop a sense of forgiveness and love towards others that didn't seem possible before. Best of all, the book presents simple rules to follow and actions to take to improve our behaviors and attitudes. It's a small book, 177 pages - every chapter is straight to the point.

Life-Changing Guidance for People Who Don't "Get It"
Better late than never! I bought this the other day and it's a page-turner. This book offers priceless insight on a wide range of common self-destructive behaviors. Some of them are common sense, and I had a good handle on how to approach them after years of therapy and other reading, however, many of the behaviors I hadn't even identified. I just didn't get it.That's to say, as someone without a very high level of emotional intelligence when analyzing myself, this book is a life-safer! It's like finding the lost instruction manual to some important aspects of life: my career, my life choices, the relationship with certain family members... The author explains it in a why I can finally understand (and I'm in my 50s).It's concise and written in plain English and uses a lot of real life examples, which is how I prefer to learn things. It's not a replacement for therapy, but it could very well help you identify and/or fix many issues. So a big thank you!
