Yes, I think you could. There may be a small boarder of the acrylic around the edges. I use it to display 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper and it fits just perfectly. I would think an 8x10 picture would work well in it.

Q: Will this display stand accommodate the thickness of a magazine?

No - it's intended for display of a sheet of paper or card stock.

Q: how many pieces of paper will it hold?

It's purpose is to be a stand to display one sheet. But you can probably put in maybe up to 5 sheets but anymore and the plastic would bow out. I use several of these stands to hold recipes in the kitchen while cooking.

Q: can these frames stand up either horizontally and vertically?

I tried to lay the frame on its side and it would probably tip forward since the base and the frame are the exact same width. If the base was at an angle or modified to an angle, they could probably work.
