Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried), or M.K. as she likes to be called, has recently come to live with her dad Bomba (Jason Sudeikis) in a ramshackle house in the middle of nowhere. Obsessed with proving the existence of a society of tiny guardians of the forest called Leafmen, who are responsible for maintaining balance by keeping the Boggans from spreading blight throughout the forest, M.K.'s dad has little time for a daughter or the realities of everyday life. A chance event lands M.K. right in the middle of the Leafmen's society, where she quickly develops a whole new appreciation for her father's eccentricities. She finds herself charged by the Leafmen's queen (Beyoncé Knowles) with a difficult task that will mean the difference between preservation and destruction for the forest. M.K. joins forces with an assortment of unlikely heroes, including slug and snail duo Mub and Grub (Aziz Ansari and Chris O'Dowd), overzealous Leafmen commander General Ronin (Colin Farrell), and Nod (Josh Hutcherson), a soldier with a bad habit of questioning authority. Their perilous journey introduces M.K. to a strange new breed of enemy and a whole new way of thinking. Loosely based on William Joyce's book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, the film shares its premise--a society of tiny people tries to thrive without drawing the attention of the larger humans--with films like the Tinker Bell movies and Arrietty. What's unique about Epic is that it's just as much action film as fantasy. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

I loved it but probobly for over 10s
I loved this film great animation and action scenes. The leaf men are the protectors of the forest. They seem to be a cross between samurais and elves. With the power of their queen they keep the Boggans at bay. The Boggans worship the power of rot and want to rot the whole forest the trouble is the Leaf men queen can grow plants back faster than they can rot them. Now is the time when the next queen is chosen this is when the Leaf men are that their most vulnerable.Enter Mk how is forced to live with her estranged father, who was ridiculed and outcast by the scientific community for his belief/obsession that they are tiny creatures that live and protect the forest. During the ceremony Mk is pulled into the epic battle for the forest, the only way she can return to her own world is to help complete the ceremony.A fast passed movie with as I said great animation, action around every corner. The snails were the only down side of the movie for me, but it is obvious there were there to attract young kids to the movie. My 6 year old turn off after one of the sad bits and only watched half the film. This is not really a fairy tale movie despite all the bright colours and animation the story is quite dark. People and things do die in this movie, and ok the snails might also be there to lighten the mood in a couple of scenes as well. A really enjoyable movie to watch.

Epic Beauty !
I went to see this as I am a fan of Josh Hutcherson and he voices one of the main characters, I didn't expect too much though to be honest and after a great summer of Animated films this was low on my list. How wrong I was, we ended up going back to see it again but in 3D the second time as it was visually stunning even in 2D.The plot follows two main characters, first we meet a seventeen year old girl called Mary Katherine (M.K) who is going to stay with her crazy scientist dad who she hasn't seen in a while. He is always out in the forest searching for evidence of tiny people who live in the trees, this frustrates M.K who just thinks he's nuts. After a disagreement M.K has had enough and decides to leave but something happens which changes her perspective on everything. We are also introduced to a tiny soldier called Nod who is kind of rebellious and wants to leave his life as a leafman behind, his job as a leafman soldier was to protect the forest from the evil boggans who plot to destroy the forest. It is when the worlds of M.K and Nod collide that the story really gets going.I just loved the characters and visuals of this film, it held it's own against a tidal wave of big movies which followed and I can't wait to watch it again on Blu-ray.

Great movie for the children
This is simply a great movie for children. It’s a fantastical adventure full of fast-paced action and fun.Boys may have some trouble identifying with the main character, our son was less attracted initially but the story should be compelling enough. We buy 3D Blu Ray’s where possible. You pay up for it but they enhance the a great family-film evening. Epic in 3D looks very sharp and natural on our fairly high-end Oled LG TV, that get supported by proper surround sound. I must say I tend to like 3Dviewing more at home than in cinema’s these days. And Epic in 3D is particularly well-done; all looks very pleasant and natural to watch.

nice
i do agree with most reviews. The movie itself and the way it was produced is just astounding, and a real eye opener about what us humans "stumpers" are in fact doing to nature (the underlying story in fact); however, the story is far too predictable and categorical about good and evil and could have done more to make it a more amazing story.the moral again is good, no one is ever alone, and family is great... well again nothing new, but i guess if it is again the subject of an animated movie, it might be because values have changed....

Magical
This movie has got to be one of the best movies I have ever seen!I don't think there was anything I did not like about it.The voice acting was amazing, especially Beyonce as Queen Tara. You really connect with this character as soon as you see/hear her. I think I literally went through every human emotion whilst on this epic journey.I recommend this for people of all ages from baby (the stunning colours will appeal) up to any age.Would make a great family movie on a drizzly afternoon.Ignore any negative review and see for yourself the magic that is this movie. And if you do join us in the world of epic, stay for the credits song Beyonce- rise up, which really goes well with the movie and makes you think about your own life.

Kids enjoyed
It was ok. It was a bit like Star Wars meets Tree Fu Tom. Quite a predictable storyline. Animation was excellent and the kids (7&4) enjoyed it.

Lovely film
I bought this film for my 9-year old sister after seeing it in the cinema a few months earlier. Not only did my sister enjoy it but I, a 20 year old, found it fun and enjoyable as well. I won't give a full synopsis but it makes a nice change from the princess movies with the standard plot. This film is reminiscent of Bug's Life but has its own unique elements to keep it interesting.I would recommend Epic as an exciting, happy film to watch with anyone! In terms of younger viewers, there are some action-like scenes but I would not say they are frightening. When seeing it in the cinema there were some very young viewers who seemed to love it!
