The Perks of Being a Wallflower [Blu-ray]

Lovely, heartfelt, unexpected, indie, worth it.
Not usually a fan of indie films, although this had a polished feel to it. It follows the life of Charlie for 6 months in high school where he has no friends but falls in with two brother and sister students who are a year or two above him and they accept him into their group. I won't spoil it, but there's a turn at the end i didn't see coming, but it made the film all the more sweeter for the payoff for Charlie, if that's what you can call it.

2 stars, because tried to deal with male-social exclusion.. BUT...
they seem to cast emma watson as highly empathetic to men charachters in films perhapsbut i cant shake, more likey an image of her being a femianzi and male hater, female-sycophant-maybe, self-grandiosing pagan? .. (thos she did wear a 'star'necklace in the film...i could not see her in the sort-of role set by the film much if at alland also the film did seem (as i predicted perhaps) to QUCIKLY degrade into a chick-flick romcom.. leaving more buirning matters about male social isolation .. perhaps for another film maker ? maybe?take care anwyaymaybe watson will changebut 3 stars just for the attempts at looking at social exclusiontake care

Great film but some quite adult themes for a 12 rating
Really loved this film - watched it with my kids who are not quite 12 yet and quite mature for their age but found I had to pause a few times to explain some things - particularly the drugs and abuse. We all really enjoyed it though - so heartfelt and heart wrenching at the same time. Highly recommend.

Enter expecting a rom-com/ indie flick and be prepared for so much more.
This film is spectacular.I entered this movie expecting a rom-com/ indie flick and ended up with so much more.It discusses many complicated issues and the acting manages to tackle those topics perfectly in the most believably innocuous way. It is empowering and optimistic while remaining engaging. Furthermore it is very well paced making moments of romance or violence come across in very engaging ways making me totally switched on through out. I enjoyed this movie in every way I can and highly recommend it.

See it!
I doubt I can add anything new to the dozens of five star reviews this film has already had here, but I have to say that I had read the book and didn't "get" it and I watched the film and completely got it. I love the naturalness of the acting, so unselfconscious and unshowy. The cast are so convincing - they are those people, totally. And I would be the first to get all socialist realist about the first world problems in the suburbs, but the story finds something universal in this suburban coming of age story, in the same way "Donnie Darko" does. You never once think about poor little rich kids. The camera work, the lighting, the script are so well judged. You never feel like a voyeur of somebody's emotional life, so unusual. And I loved the attachment to retro, the Anglophile streak a mile wide, the genuine love for those great shards of eighties culture, the Smiths and the Cocteau Twins. I loved the straightforwardness and honesty about some very difficult subjects. What the film says about sex and belonging seems to me helpful and useful and right. All this and it's good-looking and charming, the whole thing. Five stars.

Intense, touching, a revelation
Wow, what a film.I wasn't sure at first if I would be able to get into it, but then everything clicked. The main character, Charlie, isn't very good at engaging with people. Being just about to start high school, this is of course an issue. There are lots of hints about things unspoken, but the very fact of his awkwardness, his frankness, causes him to try and avoid being noticed. It's those characteristics make him endearing, and as the story progresses, and the central cast... His family and friends, who are his family as well in his vulnerability and openness, grows with him. it's touching, funny, sad and yet, ultimately uplifting. The main cast did so well, and I can't understand why I hadn't watched this film until now!I can't recommend it enough, really. Next is the book, and probably the film again.... Maybe a couple more times...

Over -praised but still highly enjoyable.
Perhaps slightly over praised on release this coming of age film set presumably in the 1980s, still packs an emotional wallop. The acting from the three main leads is spot on, though Ezra Miller is the stand out. Similarly the supporting cast are just as appealing. Nina Dobrev, who was trying to transition into movies does what she can with her limited screen time, there is a whole story involving her character which is cut out due to politics which would have added a layer of depth to both her character and Logan Lerman's character's relationship. In th end a slightly odd coming of age film which is highly enjoyable and one you can genuinely watch on repeat without cringing.

Perks
3 of 4 family members read the book. 4 of 4 family members enjoyed the film.I would guess that people who would not enjoy this sort of film would be put off by the trailers, cover and synopsis. For those who may like it the added advantage of reading the book is available. The film is great, in part at least due to the fact that it is based on a good book, that has recombined good things from other previous good books (like the Harry Potter series does). This is not a criticism. The film is a distilled version of a book that distilled good stuff from other sources. I have rewatched a few times and am likely to watch again over the years to come.
