if you Alexa to turn it on then you can swich it on and off with the lamp swich. you need to down load the ewelink app to your phone to use the snoff wifi swichers

Q: Where does the earth wire go?

On this sonoff basic the earth joins outside to the other earth wire by solder or twisting or junction. The bigger sonoff pow, lets you join earth inside unit and gives power used display for daily monthly periods.

Q: Can i use this in place of a standard uk light switch without a neutral line. then perhaps just cover it with a blanking plate?

Electricians answer- potentially you could yes. It depends which of the two wiring set ups you have in you house . if the feeds are at the light then that would be tricky . If the feeds are in the light switch then much easier.

Q: Do these work with a mesh network, I have google wifi at home?

I have not tried using them on mesh but can see no reason why they wouldn't. Be aware that they only work on the 2.4GHz band 802.11 b/g/n.
