Standing on a precipice
I don't usually review books, but I felt I had to with this one. The base premise and previous books were amazing 5/5. But the ending of this one didn't sit right with me.First, in the previous book, Eury's unrequited love is revealed, which I didn't like back then but decided to give the author the benefit of the doubt. Then through absolute contrivance(fate you could say), Ian makes out with Maria in the previous book, as well. I was basically the dog in the burning house at that point, telling myself this was fine. Then, with all the build up, we get this ending. To be clear, I give it four stars because most of this book it still really good. It's just the ending and what it means for later books that makes me want to drop this. Spoilers form here on!It feels underwhelming and contrived. Don't get me wrong, the action is all very cool. But Ari is nothing but a stupid one note "You foolish mortals!" character. After I expected more since the author humanized her by referring to her by her name instead of The Descendant. Then bluebird dies! With hardly any time or weight on it. Sure, it'll probably be mentioned in a few throw away lines later, but I don't have high hopes. Then, through stupid contrivance, Achemiss is all like, "btw, you can take another person with you" cause that makes sense. Clearly the author had this in mind since early on because it handily solves the problem of the eldmari by taking Maria and it furthers the stupid, uneccesary love triangle. At this point it feels like Eury is just the author's punching bag. Instead of doing something actually interesting with the descendant, the ending's 'high point' is the promise of a very stupid relationship between Ian and Maria and possibly some chapters expousing how absolutely miserable Eury is.I hate it when characters suffer for what feels like no reason, and worse, when things happen because the author contrived for them to happen without proper cause and effect. So, the majority of this book is swell and the previous books were amazing, but I'll likely drop this midway into the next book. I have hope the author might surprise me, but not much.

Best in the series so far
The first book in the series was a strong introduction. The second book, while still having its moments, felt like a bit of a step backwards (or that the author was still deciding where they would take things and how the magic systems should work/evolve etc). This third book is a solid improvement on the first two titles, expanding on the systems introduced in the first book, characters introduced in the second book, and improving on both while dialing up the action. I particularly like the use of the different magic types and the games of mental chess (warfare) that ensue when scenarios are involved. Wasn't expecting a 4th title going in but am looking forward to it. Its going to be a long wait to September (and the excellent audiobook narration release).

I'm Crying, Sobbing. Curse The Galse Prophet Y 123. I have been betrayed
I had hopes, not high ones, mind you. But chapter 45 hits you and you see that it was hopeless. I don't want to read the next book (not cuz of what happend in chapter 45, but what happend at the very end of the book with the cougar)ANYway 5/5 stars, cuz it did succeed in making me cry, which is a sign of good writing, even though I hated the ending. Anyway, I can't actually recommend this series anymore, until I see how it actually ends, cuz this felt like everything happend for no reason. Thematically. Like, IDK Book 2 could have just been the MC taking an oath with the cougar and succeed in seducing her and it would have had a better Thematic ending.SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERSLike, gosh is the MC going to end up with the cougar? like nooooooAnyway, plot-wise, the book was good. I'm just upset, crying, and IDK I guess Y 123 should have continued the story cuz man, No Homo. Hurt/no comfort."I will miss you"-that line made me cry, but the next one really just made it obvious that yeah, Ian isn't a bisexual"Spending more time with Euryphel would only hurt the prince more, draw him in closer to someone who could only love him as a friend."If the MC when on his own, I would be more open to the next book, but like....IS HE GOING TO END UP WITH MARIA? THE COUGAR? THE 'VILLIAN' OF THE BOOK. WHAT WHAT NOOOOOOOOOOO. Like Thats the most upsetting part, is that he got to choose to come with someone. That he choose the cougar, and not his friend becuase it 'helps' the real word more, but for the book, the author did this for a reason. They decided that this was an option, and was like yeah, lol remember, MC kissed the cougar last book, This is Enimeys to Lovers Baby, not Friends to Loves, MWHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHe could have just been forced to go on his own, accend but NOOOOOO. No, now it's an actual choice for some reason (Why coudn't he have brought Soloman with him???) and he brings HER??????

Non-stop action!
The pace is fast and the fights are faster. Ian is in a full-on sprint toward his showdown with the descendant and the Eldemari.

A Culmination of Many Threads
In this book of the series, all of the careful work the author had put into play during the last book culminates in an action packed story, that only leaves more excitement for the coming books ahead. We get to see Ian grow and develop, both in power and as a character. If you liked the previous books of the series you will almost certainly enjoy this one.

it had its moments..
The end affinity is really annoying to the storytelling. So very jarring and kind of takes all the oomph out if the action. Otherwise i really like the premise. Author sticks with it which I respect and is willing to even have complicated plot devices and lets their affect hang around without long drawn out explanations. Still only 3/5 though for that end affinity business.
