Use care when blending with essential oils.
This is an updated review. My initial experience when working with this base was that essential oils would not fully incorporate and would separate out of it, at a dilution of 2-2.5%. After playing with the base a little and trying both different oils and different methods of blending, I found that the base will accept oils at a dilution of 1.5-2%, with the lower percentage being necessary for thicker or resinous oils such as Vetiver. In addition, you simply cannot blend essential oils into this base without a stick blender or electric mixer - it requires a high shear to incorporate the oils fully. The last thing anyone wants is to have a glob of pure essential oil sitting at the top of their lotion bottle! By using a stick blender I was able to get uniform dispersion of my essential oil blend throughout the base. Because of this, I am upgrading my review from 3 to 4 stars. I think it would be helpful if Catalina added additional guidelines on how to use their base for proper blending. In addition, I would caution against using thicker, resinous oils in this base that are typically harder to emulsify - they really seem to fight being incorporated into the lotion.
