Review "The Last Pearl Fisher of Scotland is a gently comic, gently tragic novel, full of lyricism, humanity and the pearl that is love. Read it at once" (A. L. Kennedy) About the Author Julia Stuart is a bestselling novelist and an award-winning journalist. She grew up in the West Midlands, and has lived in France, Spain and, most recently, Bahrain. Her previous novels include The Matchmaker of Perigord and Balthazar Jones and the Tower of London Zoo, which was published in 2010 to great acclaim, and went on to be a New York Times bestseller.

Ok
Twee story, Well written, but not that exciting.Interesting that Pearl fishing was a legitimate livelihood. Predictable send, but nice.

Very enjoyable
A very enjoyable and interesting book, beautifully written. Only negatives were that I felt the whole rabbit subplot was irresponsible, and sometimes the plot as a whole felt a bit flimsy and rushed in places.

Disappointing but not a bad read
I have really enjoyed Julia Stuart's other 3 books, but am sorry to say I was disappointed with this one. The story line was also reminiscent of the Tower, The Zoo and The Tortoise only sadder and without the quirky humor. I also felt she left some loose ends, like she just got tired of writing it and ended it.

Got it on Thursday, started reading it on Friday, finished it three hours later. It's a real delight to find a page-turner that's both beautifully written and from which you learn something interesting about the world.

The Last Pearl Fisher Of Scotland.
I was initially apprehensive when I started reading this, but it turned out to be a rather nice, heart-warming little tale.Julia Stuart has gone very much for the whimsical approach in this amiable, gently moving story; It concerns the McBride family, the father Brodie being the pearl fisher of the novel`s title; he and his wife Elsbeth have a ten year old daughter - Maggie - who is concerned that the couple may be going the way of her friend's parents who are divorced; times are hard for the McBrides and Brodie is struggling to make his profession profitable. My concern was that Maggie would turn out to be some smart-aleck kid, but Stuart has balanced and judged her character just right; the plot and characters easily capture the feel of life in a Scottish small town and although some of the writing strives for humour a little too much at times it carries the reader along quite merrily, alternating different plot strands during the course of each chapter; the story is convincing and the characterisation is believable and engaging; the bitter-sweet revelations and final outcome well-handled.My only concern was how did things turn out for Frank the rabbit?A delightful, moving novel, imaginative and absorbing. An easy recommendation for a few hours pleasant reading.
