The Littlest Leaguer (I Can Read Level 1)

Basic reading level but higher thinking level
This book is at a basic reading level with easy words and flow; however, the strategy the main character uses to outwit the pitcher was difficult for my older students (3rd graders) to understand because none of them had baseball experience. This book would be best for an older student who struggles to read, but also one who loves baseball and plays the game.

Let’s go baseball season!
Great little book to get a young child interested in baseball and being part of a team.

Just ok
This is an odd book. My son loves baseball so I thought this would be a great book to practice reading. I personally do not like the bullying by the boys teammates and the message that you don’t get chances purely because of size. On the positive side, there is a female teammate and people of color in the book.

Excellent book for young children and players
I read the book for my son and did a review on my blog, [...] I have to say this is an easy to read book for a young child around 3 to 5 years old. The language is simple for any young reader and has a good moral to the story. This was a very good book.

I loved this book, too!
Reading with 5 yr old Vincent is a joy and this book was not only enjoyable to share together, but I was able to see just how well he was coming along in his reading skills. He was happy to see Nana was so proud of his reading abilities.

Not the uplifting story I was hoping for
The writing and images are good. And it would be easy enough for a level 1 or 2 reader. The concept was there but honestly ended up disappointed and returned. This is not quite the postive or uplifting story of a small little leaguer I was expecting and hoping for. I bought with the thought to give to a few of the really young (and short) kids on my TBall team thinking it would help give them a sweet boost of confidence or something but after reading it through first that won't be happening. The main character gets mercilessly bullied through the whole book and then through nothing more than dumb luck and chance (with his eyes closed too so not even his actual skill!) he happens to do good for the team but thats the end so we don't even get some redemption or apology from the other team mates. Also there is a quantity limit for purchases which almost put me off in the first place because I had wanted to get one for each kid.All and all, but at your own discretion but not if you are looking for a story that shows being small in a positive light.
