Q: How are these as replacement sprinklers on existing systems? I have 1/2" pipes supplying the water...and most of my old sprinkler heads 6" tall.

If they are Rainbird or Hunter or virtually any other company other than Toro, they are great. All you have to do is lift up the riser (you can't have true rotors on the zone) and unscrew the head that is on it, and screw this on. You do have to change an entire zone at a time, because they save water. Any ones that are not changed will have too much pressure. You can check the pop up by lifting a riser and unscrewing one and making sure the thread is on the inside of the head.

Q: Do they have a gear system ? How do they water the area from the sprinkler to the farthest set point ?

No gear system, this was just the insert to an existing sprinkler head

Q: Do these really save water if you have to double the watering time?

Yes, they spread the water evenly but at a lower rate. Complete coverage at a slower rate is better and avoids run off.
