An excellent beginners book
An excellent beginners book. It's gotten me familiar with the terminology and design philosophy. As a new Android developer it was important to understand the ins and outs of the framework and how all the parts work together. This book was very helpful in explaining the hows and why of the various parts. For more experienced users, this might be a little too detailed in the basics, but the topics covered have something for everyone

Great content but needed editing and polishing
The content of the book is great, but it could really use an editor's touch for polishing. I found myself stumbling over sentences that conveyed the proper meaning, but in language that was clumsy and forced me to slow down and digest what was being said.My review would have been five stars had the writing been more polished.

Decent content, but...
The content of this book isn't bad, but two main gripes:1) Too many spelling errors. Really, have an editor look at this before you publish it. Just two examples:- "let's" rather than "lets," for example "The AVD Manager let's you create and manage different virtual devices for you."- "it's" rather than "its," for example ...by specifying it's hardware and software configurations."Etc.---and that's just in the first 15 pages or so.2) A good number of screenshots are missing, both from the ebook and the printed version (I have both). For example, there are captions for figures 6.4 through 6.7, but no actual screenshots. Same with 12.12 through 12.14. Etc.

Bad quality, and not for beginners at all!!
First of all the book looks like it was printed in somebody basement the (the font and page quality)second of all the book is not at all for beginners, and people that don't already know java, and even people that do know java I don't think they would be able to follow the book properly.

I love this book
I love this book. The Print is large so you can read through it and take notes with the ample space this book provides. If you are just starting app development in Android this gives you the basic's like different screen sizes ie... smart-phone, tablet, laptop, with different resolution with code snippets that shows you how the code should look like and understand. Displaying pictures, menu's etc.. Keeping Data Presistent, content providers, SMS, and E-mail messaging, Network,Developing Android Services, Publishing Android Services, Understanding the Android User Interface. This book will get you the basic developing so you can go to the Android Professional Developing Applications books. I like that he includes Pictures of menu's with written code underneath to you can see what the code looks like and shows you the output that code produces.I wish that all Developing books would in COLOR!!!I wished that the book could have Mobil, smartphones devises that code building APP that shows you a conceptThis book does not give you a understanding of Java keywords, methods, Loops, SQL- Database etc... this shows you the basics of Java code to the above topics .He tries to just the get you the basics that way you can understand Java role in devices.

Already Outdated
This book is written for the old SDK/ADT bundle and Eclipse IDE. The new and supported IDE is now Android Studio. This makes it more difficult to follow the screen shots in the book as the new IDE has a revamped format and the process steps have changed. In addition, the book is written for Android 4.4 - KitKat or API level 19; 5.0 - Lollipop or level 21 is the highest at this time (Jan. 2015). For novices like me, I would prefer a book that follows the Android Studio IDE.
