Better than Lonely Planet for Sao Paulo
When I was at the bookstore, I did not hesitate to purchase the Lonely Planet books for my upcoming trip to Brazil, the phrasebook and overall Brazil version. Many of my friends suggested the Lonely Planet series so I figured it was dependable. I spent all the hours leading up to my trip familiarizing myself with the contents of both books. Since my trip was for only a week, I wanted to make sure I could hit all the "cool" spots and restaurants. However, once I arrived to Sao Paulo, my friend lent me her copy of this book, Time Out! - Sao Paulo. It is unbelievably well-organized. There are a few pages in the beginning that covers the background of each neighborhood. The book is divided into several sections, including Food (Consume), Shop, Arts & Entertainment, etc. Within each of these sections, there are additional sub-sections for each neighborhood within Sao Paulo. Of course, they also include the pricing scale for some of these establishments to help travelers stay within budget. There are several maps and pages on translations in the back to use as reference. In short, I found this book to be incredibly useful and easy to navigate. it was more helpful than the Lonely Planet book because it included more detailed maps, more up-to-date, cool descriptions, and photos.

a disappointing read
I found this book quite annoying to read as a guide book and as a rule I would normally choose a lonely planet guide over a Time Out one every time, but they don't seem to do one. Although it seems to hold a lot of info there is no really succinct introductory section on the highlights to be had in SP to entice you to explore more of the book or the city itself which I am sure are there by the bucket load. Its district-based chapters are essentially just an endless listing of what's there but nothing leaps out and grabs you and urges you to get stuck in. It's as if they were afraid to give an opinion on anything other than shopping & nothing seems to get more than a few lines - if that. Generally I expect more from a City Guide - and sadly this fell short. Lonely Planet it ain't!
