Okay if you are just visiting NM
I have mixed feelings about this book. It has good information about the Santa Fe area, but many other close trails (Placitas for example) are totally ignored. This is too bad because there are a lot of great places to hike in NM, especially in the national forest. The information about individual trails include a map and fairly detailed direction. I would have preferred if this guide had mentioned whether or not the trails were dog friendly. A lot in NM are, thankfully, but some like Tent Rocks, are not. My kids and I drove 45 minutes to Tent Rocks only to have to turn right around because we couldn't bring our puppy. In a state as dog friendly as NM, that kind of information is important to include! I would like to see spin-offs of this book that focused specifically on different regions of NM. The state has a lot to offer, and this book only shows the most crowded and popular trails.

New Mexico Trail Hounds Rejoice!
Book is well written. Extremely useful for planing which hikes you might want to tackle. Entire state of NM appeArs to be covered. Pretty typical of most hiking books I've read and used. A good resource to have for your trip.

Very helpful!
Love to hike, and camp. I bought this book because I am from Indiana, and know very little about New Mexico. This book has a lot of in dept trails and information which helped my family and I plan a very fun and memorable week in New Mexico. The only problem is picking which trails to hike in the time you have. We will be going back to New Mexico, and will be taking this book back with us. Just a side note, if you are going to New Mexico and have the means, you should camp at least one night at White Sands......so beautiful, it is hard to describe.

Not the right guide for geezers in Santa Fe.
I was hoping for a book with a good selection of moderate to easy hikes around Santa Fe. I could tell from the index that there were 11-12 hikes in the mountains north of Santa Fe but it turns out that all but four of those are long, "strenuous" hikes of no use to my group of 75 year old geezers. I should have bought a guide limited to hikes in the Santa Fe area. There are several available, including one in the same series as this one and the local Sierra Club has just put out a new edition of theirs. I chose this one because I liked this author's guide to hikes in Big Bend. It might have been useful if the publishers had provided access to a page allowing one to see the degree of difficulty of all the hikes.

High quality Hiking book
I just received the book, and have already hit up a bunch of the trails. This book is written very well, and the difficulty levels are very accurate. It has good information about the water sources on the trails which is vital here in southern NM. I only wish it was a little smaller and water resistent, but then the price would skyrocket. Once again, another great book, at a great amazon price.

Good choice!
My boys, aged 10 & 8, chose this as their dad's Father's Day gift. They were so excited when it arrived that we ended up giving it to him that night! My husband loves this book and says it gives a lot of great info on popular trails and paths less traveled. Definitely recommended for hikers of any skill level!
