Based on a true story.....
So this movie has been available a long time.My understanding is that it's a true story. It is sad and there are things in the movie that you'll ask "why would a person do that?". Though I'd say it is real and that drives home the fact that we should all do what we can to prevent it.I believe that in real life the brother of the child who was kidnapped later became the maintenance worker turned serial killer in Yosimite National Park some years later.

A Tragic True Story
Having watched the documentary series on Hulu, "Captive Audience", I was reminded of this TV drama from 1989. Even more tragic that I remembered, this movie portrays what happened to Steven Stayner, who was abducted at 7 years old and held captive for 7 years.

Real story of childhood trama, done very well.
I watched this many years ago. I wanted a copy to help my family understand how communication is such an important part of any relationship.

Worth the watch!
I purchased this to watch with my 18 yr old son. A new 3 part series premiered expanding on his story with his real family leading up to Cary becoming a serial killer. After we watched that together I told him about this movie and he really enjoyed it. I was a kid myself at the time and told my son what I remembered hearing.

Excellent TV movie of a real life tragedy
This was a very well made TV movie about a real tragedy. A young boy is kidnapped and severely abused, waiting for a rescue that never arrives. Finally as a teenager, still being abused, he risks his life to save another kidnapped boy and finds some good in life for a short time.Difficult to watch, but I do recommend it.This movie is one of the reasons why I wish Amazon hadn't shut down the imdb forums. There is no other meeting place to discuss small films like this (and so many, many others) and read messages from years past. Everywhere else is fractured, short term and limited and it seems that every internet service company keeps trying to limit open discussion. It's a shame. Filmboards tries (I've reread the messages from this film and others multiple times there), but I so miss the imdb forums.

A fabulous movie with less credit than it deserved.
As great and "educational" as I've always believed this movie is, I think the writers should of taken a closer look at the book; particularly regarding Steven's last day before he was kidnapped. In the film his last day is him getting in trouble with his father for not coming straight home and his father's last sentence to him being "Son, don't ever make me sorry I didn't whip you here tonight." In the book however, which is collaborated by Steven himself and the rest of the Stayner family, Steven's last day is nothing like it. It's a happy one with him going to a friend's birthday party and having the time of his life, him having a jovial conversation with his mother in the car afterwards about what he wants for Christmas, and him spending the rest of the evening at home snuggling with his father and Del delighting in his son's wonder. The writers should of made the film's beginning more like that just to add a little happiness to it before the dark story emerges.Secondly, the critics gave all the credit to Corin Nemec about portraying Steven and totally ignored Luke Edwards. To me, that sucks all! Luke not only gives an extraordinary performance, but portrays the most intense part of the story which is being kidnapped as a little boy. So what if Luke was unknown at the time and maybe still is? That's no reason to ignore his performance.I KNOW MY FIRST NAME IS STEVEN is a landmark TV movie that should of received more credit than it did. As I recall it received lots of Emmy nominations and lost practically all of them. Emmys should of gone to all the principle actors; starting with Luke Edwards. One of the great things about this is Steven was around to see it all come to life. His death is a tragedy but at least he's free of all pain now.

Awesome but tragic.
This is a heart breaking true story of the Abduction and imprisonment of Steven stayner by a sick pervert who abused him for 7 years until the abuser abducted another boy 5 year old timmy , who steven realised he had to save from the same fate that he suffered. Dispite all that he suffered this was only the biginning of stevens torment what with the trial bullies at school and the horrable memories. This is an indepth brital look at the scares of sexual abuse and seperation from ones family. and he was made to belive his family did not want him, and gave him up. You also see the terrible torment of the family. This is a must watch. It will haunt you all the more because it was real. at the end of the film you are told the fate af all the main protagonists in real life. Even there there is tragedy.

A Tragic and Emotional True Life Story
You can’t find genuine copies of this often available in the uk so happy to find thisAn emotional and heartbreaking real life story of Steven Stayner and his abduction, a really well put together film from both perspectives , the story of a confused and scared Steven and his twisted captor and their relationship over the years, and the story of his family’s heartbreak and desperation to find their sonThe story building across 7 years of a frightening and confusing life for Steven to the age of 14 when his Captor abducts another boy, 5yo Timmy, and Steven must now face the truth of reality and fight to escape and save them bothThe most tragic part of the whole story is this was just the start of the Story of the Stayner family and what happened next to Steven and his brother only make this even more heartbreaking
