This works up very pretty. It ABSOLUTELY DOES split as others have said. Not occasionally. All the time. You have to watch your yarn to make sure your hook doesn't go through a split without you noticing. Therefore, you can NOT crochet and watch TV. Or, crochet and keep your head up to talk to someone. If you do, you will be going back rows to fix the Split stitch.On the other hand, pullijng it out to get to the spot to fix, doesn't make it split any worse than it did to begin with. I really don't remember Red Heart yarn splitting like this, and, I have NEVER had to crochet with yarn that splits like this from ant ither brand. I don't know if this is now the quality of Red Heart yarn, whether you buy it in a real store or on line, or, if this is the quality if the yarn that they sell on line only.In either case, I would not recommend this for a beginner because it would be pretty frustrating, might lead to them giving up on crochet, and, might give a Crochet beginner the impression that you have to help your head down, staring at your yarn with each stitch.As to softness, no, it is not a soft and cuddly yarn.

Doesn’t feel scratchy. Soft.
