Very versatile headlamp for a great price
This is my 4th Sofirn light and my 2nd Sofirn headlamp. The other is the H25LR, which I like more, but I'll get into that later. My first headlamp, a Zebralight H600w mk II, has been my go-to since 2015 (yep, 10 years and still going strong), so that's kind of what I compare every headlamp to. It's not perfect, but I'm very used to it.I'll start with the HS21: The thing that stands out to me the most about the HS21 is the rotating mode switcher. I didn't think I would like it because it adds bulk, but I actually love it. I have a lot of flashlights, and they don't all use the same UI. I love flashlights, but I don't love them enough to memorize every UI, and sometimes I just need something quickly that I can use without thinking. The rotating mode switcher makes that a little easier. It switches between spotlight, floodlight, both, and red. Then you just hold the power button to cycle through brightness levels. Probably the most straightforward of all of my flashlights. I'm also indecisive, so it's awesome to have both a throwy and floody light in one without having to use a diffuser or have two flashlights. For those reasons, I like it as a quick-grab headlamp that will give me plenty of light quickly. However, there are a few reasons it's not my FAVORITE, but be aware that these are all personal preference. The SFT40 LED for the spotlight is generally a good LED, but I don't really care for it at 6000-6500k. It's too cool for me, but that's just my preference; I like to be somewhere around 4000k. Additionally, the up/down adjuster clicks into place, so it only has 10 positions. My Zebralight is infinite because it doesn't have notches, and the Sofirn H25LR is around 30 positions. Not a deal-breaker, but I really like being able to freely adjust the angle to get it perfect. Lastly, the lowest brightness is too bright for me (on both Sofirns actually). My Zebralight can go as low as .01, .06 and .4 lumens. That doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's really nice to have those super low settings when it's really dark out. The next brightest setting is generally too bright for me while walking through my neighborhood with my dog because I don't like drawing too much attention, especially on the really late walks. I just want to be able to see if I’m going to trip on an uneven sidewalk. Like I said, though, those are all personal preference. The HS21 is very versatile and built well. Here are my pros/cons:Pros:- Easy UI/rotating mode switcher- Red LED (I never knew how much I'd like having a red LED on my headlamp!)- Spotlight AND floodlight in one- The red beam and floodlight settings have virtually NO hotspot or hard edge- Plenty bright in high and turbo, and the battery lasts a long time in low and moonlight, which are all I usually need for dog walks- Infrared sensors are a cool idea, though I haven't really used them yetCons:- The T shape adds some weight and makes it feel slightly less stable on my head compared to the Zebralight and H25LR- Too bright on lowest mode (for me)- Not as many positions as other headlamps, but there were enough, so not really a con I guess- USB port is covered by a rubber plug compared to the H25LR which hides it under the screw cap- Cool LEDs with lower CRINow to compare it with the H25LR and why I prefer that one. The H25LR. The H25LR has warmer, higher CRI LEDs (more floody with almost no hotspot), although I couldn't find the specific LED model on Sofirn's website. The H25LR's red LED is a slightly deeper red, whereas the HS21 leans just slightly more toward orange. You wouldn't notice without looking at them side-by-side though. The H25LR is very noticeably lighter and feels better on your head because it's just a straight tube instead of a T. I also prefer the hidden USB port. I like that it goes down to 1 lumen for both red and white. I wish it had something between 1 and 35 lumens, but with only 4 brightness settings, there isn't room for that. Compared to my Zebralight, 30 lumens is the 6th possible brightness level (of 11 programmable options), and the HS21 goes straight from 1 to 35.Overall, for dog walks, I'm still grabbing my trusty Zebralight because of the smaller brightness increments. But for cleaning out my fireplace, working on my car, or anything that just needs a blast of light, I choose the HS21 for its versatility. It's amazing for that purpose, and that's why I give it 5 stars even though I grab my Zebralight more often (and like I said earlier, I'm also just way more used to the ZL). The H25LR is the one I reach for when I drop a tiny screw or spring on my carpet and need the high CRI to be able to see more detail.Note: I tried to take some photos showing the beam shots, but I haven't quite figured out the best way to do it yet. From top to bottom: HS21 spotlight, HS21 both, HS21 red, H25LR (to show hotspot comparison)

High Quality Headlamp with Extremely Bright LED's, Long Run Times and Hands Free Operation
This is a quality headlamp. The runtimes are insane, and the light is extremely bright. The unit has a rotary dial switch for selecting spotlight, floodlight, combo, and red, and a central mounted button for brightness, Brightness levels are selected by "ramping" which is holding down the button or using the amazing wave pass where you just wave your hand near the sensor. The headband is comfortable and it doesn't feel too heavy even after several minutes of use and has onboard charging of the removable 18660 battery. Turbo is very bright at 2300 lumens for combo mode, while moonlight will run over 250 hours on combo and 450 hours on red light. The center spotlight led is a the popular SFT-40 that is a very bright thrower along with good spill, while the surrounding CSI1919 flood emitters are a high CRI (color resolution index) that is true color and good for photography. The red LED's are a beautiful shade of red and are great for keeping one's night vision. But probably the most unique feature of this light is the wave control, you don't even have to touch the unit to change brightness levels, just wave your hand near the right hand side and it will ramp thru the brightness levels! It is simply amazing. You can also turn the unit off by holding your hand near the sensor.I enjoy this light immensely and highly recommend it for preppers and workmen who need long runtimes for a hands free light for operations. The high CRI floodlight is now one of my very favorite lights in my ever growing collection collection of flashlights.SPOT LIGHT -moonlight 350 hours(2 lumens), low 37 hours (50 lumens), medium 6 hours (400lumens), high 10 minutes +90 minutes (1000 lumens/800 lumens) , turbo 2 minutes + 90 minutes (2000 lumens/1000lumens)FLOODLIGHT -moonlight 250 hours (2 lumens), low 45 hours (30 lumens), medium 10 hours (150 lumens), high 2.4 hours (500 lumens), turbo 2 minutes +140 minutes (1200 lumens/ 500 lumens)COMBO - moonlight 250 hours (2 lumens ), low 12.5 hours (100 lumens), medium 3.5 hours (400 lumens), high 8 minutes + 150 minutes (1000 lumens /650 lumens), turbo 2 minutes +90 minutes (2300 lumens /1000 lumens)RED -moonlight 450 hours (.5 lumens), low 250 hours (2 lumens), medium 29 hours(20 lumens), high 12.5 hours (50 lumens), turbo 5 hours (100 lumens)

hand free changing light level is interesting
I have a few headlamps throughout the years. Sofirn HS21 stands out with rotary light control dial and also hand free light intensity control function. The HS21 features four distinct light modes: red light, flood light, focused spotlight, and a combined flood and spotlight. Each mode is selected using a rotary dial, while the light intensity is controlled via the power switch. Additionally, when the motion sensor function is activated, you can adjust the brightness by simply waving your hand forward or backward on the right side of the light. The sensor is very sensitive, so be careful not to trigger it accidentally with unintended hand movements. The power is provided by an included 18650 li-ion battery. It can be recharged through an USB-C port on the side. The light can be used while it is been recharged. Interestingly, the headlamp can work without the battery as long as it is connected to a power source through USB-C port. But it will limit the light to couple light intensity levels. The HS21 headlamp is versatile as a work light or simply a light for taking a stroll at night.
