This case will fit the 6th generation iPad (model #A1893 or A1954).

Does it flip over and cover the screen?

The stand folds flat and flush with the back and the other one does flip over and covers perfectly over the screen.

what is the weight of the case?

Very light does not add much weight.. did not weigh it though

Do you need to use a screen protector with this item?

Not necessary, the lid has a soft texture that does not scratches the ipad screen and since is magnetic makes protection even easier, the case wraps around all edges of the case cover. I will say that if there are no kids and you TAKE care of your items and is going to be in a "sand/tools/keys/pointy items free environment" it would be ok not to have a screen protector. BUT sicne you paid so much for your ipad and is an expensive investment why not add one? I hope it helps.
