Q: How does Hoover honor their 5 year warranty if this carpet cleaner breaks?

Your SmartWash warranty gives you protection should your carpet cleaner ever stop working or break due to a defect in material or workmanship. You can find a copy of the warranty in the product manual for reference.

Q: Do I have to use shampoo or can you just use hot water?

All of the reviewers that say use shampoo do not tell you that residue left in your carpet will attract more dirt, it will stick to the shampoo left in your carpet. I've only used hot water to "steam" clean my carpets and they stay cleaner longer because their is nothing in the carpet to hold the dirt in it. Also, if you have pets, you don't want them licking the carpet that has chemicals on it. You can use shampoo but I would go back over the carpet with water only to get all the shampoo out of the carpet.

Q: I fill the solution tank about 1/2 way and as im cleaning its now completley full? Its as if my water tank is draining into the solution tank...is th

I've never had this happen. Sounds like the check valve to the solution tank is haywire. I'd call Hoover customer service if it's still under warranty or if you've had it less than 30 days, return it to Amazon.
