Is there a warning or some way to tell before it runs out of toner?

Yes. You know when it begins to print poorly, such as printing light or parts of the page missing. When that happens, remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it back on forth a few time. Then reinstall it. That should fix the problem for a short while, but it's best to keep a spare toner cartridge on hand.

Does this handle generic cartridges well?

No it is not wireless. However I have software installed on my computer attached to the printer that allows me to print from ipad wirelessly which is great.
