Becoming Magi
Before Buckland. before Gardner. Before Crowley, before sciencetolagy and chaos magick. There was only one. There was "The Golden Dawn."Stuck trying to understand Ritual Magick? Don't know who to believe or what to trust? Are you searching for the "Roots Of It All"? Well then this is the book for you.As all the other possitive reviewers say. " this is not a beginners book nor is it a step by step guide". It is lessions with out test, rituals filled with what should take 10 or more people to do. Deep esoteric theories that will have you drinking coffee all night trying to stay awake because you will find yourself rereading things over and over again trying to wrap your mind around it. But there lays the key. Magick is not the study for the lazy, you cant just jump off the couch and start invoking spirits, commanding demons or even communing with angels with out first being deeply rooted in understanding of how it all works.( a shadow is just a powerless shadow with in the darkness, you have to learn to turn on the light.)And how does one perform rituals so complex that require so many? It's called: God form assumption and symbolically. ( or join a Temple and good luck with that, if you happen to be close enough to one and you know the right people) I know your asking. " and how do I learn all that"? From this book. The golden dawn, combined with Hener Cornelius Agrippas Three Books of Occult philosophy and Donald Michael Craigs Lessons in high Magick you will be on your way to all the understanding you'll need to proper high magick.

This got me interested in Thelema
Wonderful reading, tons of information from a "Christ-ian" point of view. I had this book a long time ago and lost it a few years later, have yet to buy it again. Granted, most of the rituals in here are not for the Thelemite, but it does the basic structure and knowledge of the system which Aleister Crowley reworked to become the A.'.A.'. It also tells of alchemy and some stories surrounding the philosopher's stone. Note that that the ankh (soul symbol) is Greco-Egyptian, not only similar to the Venus glyph but also the sandal-strap of Hermes. Many of the teachings are Greek Gnostic and Egyptian, being a syncretic system. And I loved the tables for the planets, which are a nice complement to those in Liber 777.

I am a NOVELIST (or, I attempt to be)!
I need material for mystery novels that I try to write. I bought this book (The Golden Dawn) for the purpose of getting various ideas although I feel that the people who are attracted to such "sick-societies" are strange and some could be somewhat sinister. I may want to read about them, but I would never have a friend who is involved in "witchcraft".(Scary crap, but it is perhaps an extension of an ancient religion, going back tens of thousands of years, or longer).AMAZON is the MOST WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION! You offer perfection, and on time, and I consider you the best business around the globe!I CANNOT STAY STOP SAYING ENOUGH GREAT THINGS ABOUT AMAZON!!! I TRULY LOVE YOU GUYS!!!(Maybe one day, you will be selling my books - thirty - of them)!

Ambivalent
This is admittedly a decent presentation of the teachings of the Golden Dawn. It is those teachings in and of themselves that I am ambivalent about. The founders of the Golden Dawn were in a certain Judaeo-Christian and Hermetic tradition, a tradition that I accept myself. They often appear, though, to be moving in the direction of Neopaganism -- the preference of the publisher. And Crowley is mentioned too often in the notes and such for my taste. I find him objectionable on many levels -- his antichristianity, egotism, and various vices and atrocities.

A Must have
A must have for those interested in the Golden Dawn. So much information inside. The book is incredibly thick with pages filled with valuable information for anyone interested in ceremonial magick, hermeticism, astrology, alchemy, numerology and tarot. Very well written with diagrams. Although much of the ceremonial rituals will require a group setting, there is still much to take away from the book for the solitary practitioner.

The introductions and later additions by Israel Regardie enhance the entire work wonderfully. Definitely and essential purchase
I have the first set of books from the 1970s published by Israel REgardie. They were hard to understand. When I received this one, I was absolutely thrilled with the index. The index makes this so worthwhile, and I have been able to move forward much more quickly in getting information. The introductions and later additions by Israel Regardie enhance the entire work wonderfully. Definitely and essential purchase for Golden Dawn study.

Just a brilliant read!
If you need knowledge on the Golden Dawn system of magick, then this book will give you a great amount of insight. It's also brilliant if you want to know what some of the worlds best witches and magickians learnt, including W.B. Yeats, Mathers, Crowley et al. You see in detail what helped Crowley inspire Gerald Gardner to create British Wicca. Deep and spiritual.

THE authoritative starting point for GD Sturdy
There are plenty of reasons why Israel Regardie goes a bit over the top and his version of the 'Z' documents are incomplete, but he is still the best source of outer order rituals. The HOGD still uses them! The eBook is handier than carting around the paperback and I have seen several besides mine at meetings of the London Temple!
