It has an adaptor which plugs into a normal UK mains socket. The adaptor is actually a transformer which steps the voltage down to 12V AC. To make the 12 V cable cat proof, you can buy a cable protector (or just use a couple of metres of old hosepipe split down the middle). I'm never happy about mixing electricity with water so, to make the whole thing a bit safer, I plug the adaptor into a separate Residual Current Circuit Breaker as my mains distribution box is equipped only with MCBs.

Bought this some time ago for my cats - they liked it. I now have the pioneer pet stainless steel large filter which is easier to clean - replacement filters are cheaper from RL pet products. I also have the Avalon ceramic filter by Petsafe for my old cat. Stainless Steel & ceramic are better than plastic re bacteria

Q: I have the 5L version and have had to sit it on a towel as it leaks so much!! What can I do to stop it?

Mine doesn't leak at all and this is my 2nd one, after the 1st had continued use for 4yrs.I suggest you turn the flow down, this will help any splashing but remember that dogs and cats either drink messy or play and you will get water on the floor.If the unit is leaking, send it back for safety reasons.

Q: Does it have an auto cutout for the pump if the water level drops?

no, as far as i am aware none of the Petsafe/Drinkwell units have that function
