Q: Do the arrows marked “pour” just suggest an area for liqud to dribble through a loosened lid? My old thermos had an open & close spout on top.

Exactly, you turn the lid until it's a little loose, then you can pour the drink from where the arrow indicates (that way you save hit while pouring as the lid doesn't open all the way). It works perfectly.

Q: How big is the opening? easy cleaning? has anyone tried 16oz thermos they sell at target? how does this one compare?

The opening is fairly large. Easy to pour hot liquids into it. I use mine to make tea at around 6:30 am and pour it into the bottle. It keeps it plenty hot for drinking at lunch time. I do not know what they sell at Target but as long as you buy Thermos brand you really can't go wrong. They make quality products and I have never been disappointed. The lid/cap serves as a nice drinking cup. You just have to refill it because it is on the small side. I like this bottle because it can hold a good two cups of prepared tea or coffee.
