This was a favourite book of mine when I was a child, and it has been a delight to introduce my two sons to this story. We have the book and the audio CD and both my boys (aged 6 and 3) love it and want to listen to it (or read it) repeatedly. All the books in this series are nice, but this, The owl who was afraid of the dark, and the gorilla who wanted to grow up are my preferred ones.The book doesn't have tonnes of pictures, but it is a lovely story for children and can be read over a few evenings if need be. It is about a penguin chick who grows up and learns about the world he lives in and what it means to be an emperor penguin. It is gentle and well written and the audio version is nicely read.Please note, this book used to be called "Penguin's Progress"

My little boy is 4 years old and he has always loved stories. However, this is the first story he has had where there are more words than pictures. He has been absolutely enthralled and enchanted by Otto and his journey to becoming a fully grown penguin. While the illustrations are wonderful it is the actual story that has held his interest. This is a fantastic book to use as a transition from picture books to actual story books. I have read this to him about 20 times in the last 10 days! We have now moved onto the "Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark" by the same author and he is enjoying it almost as much.

Just like The Owl Who Was Scared of The Dark, this book is turning out to be just as good. My grandsons love watching each chapter that I video for them! They are enjoying finding out about Otto the Emperor Penguin.Great price and arrived earlier than expected,thank you.

What a lovely book! My six year old daughter was entranced reading about the baby penguin growing up day by day. Lovely for her to read on her own or when she was tired I'd read a few pages to her. Lovely black and white illustrations to break up nearly every page too so keeps them interested.

My son had been reading this at school and asked me to buy it for him.We read it over a few nights at bedroom and we both loved this delightful story. Great book.

My 4 year old requested a Penguin Party (Why?) so I had to buy this.It isn't quite "Plop/The owl who was afraid of the dark" but it is still great.It is a chapter book with black-and-white drawings. I read 2 or 3 chapters a night.As one of the first penguins to hatch our hero has to learn how the world works for himself and pass his knowledge on to the younger hatchings. They survive the Antarctic winter and he leads the hatchings to the sea to swim and fend for themselves.

This book was brilliant for my 6 year old learning about penguins. It got him thinking about the life cycle of a penguin and he loved looking at the beautiful illistrations.
