I think you could paint it -- there isn't a real thick varnish or anything on it. I've used chalk paint before and I'm betting it would work on this bench. Good idea, actually -- I hadn't thought of painting it!

The instructions came in the box. Unfortunately, we threw them out after construction

Q: Can this item remain outside in the elements? (Rain, etc)

We keep ours indoors, so I really don't know how it would hold up in the weather. Not sure I would risk it. It is a lovely bench.
