How do you get the adhesive backing off? All I end up doing is ripping it off of the felt.

Yes,,,the adhesive backing does tend to take some of the padding with it but I find if I do that at a corner,,,,THEN peel the attached backing away from the thin bit of separated foam....I get to a corner with only backing that then pulls away completely as you continue. An initial thin knife of Xacto blade might also work but I don't bother.
