Each buzzer makes a different sound so you should be able to tell who pressed it first. Also they have one that is light and sound buzzer so you can see as well as hear which one was pressed first.

How many batteries does each need? What size?

Each one takes two AAA batteries, but you need a very small Phillip's head screwdriver to get the back off in order to install them.

did they break easily?

No, they are well-made. The kids using them are 12, 13, and 14, so I can't tell you if they are toddler-proof!
