Would this work for a fireplace opened on both sides? Or is it meant only for a front view with a fire wall behind it?

No I've ordered two and I love them for both my fireplace. I've used them for 2 "non-fireplace" warm months -they're great. I just order the Homemory 12PCS Auto Timer Flameless Votive Candles, Flickering... six hour timed votive tea candle lights they're perfect!!
