The book is really good. I am missing more technical stuff but still it's a great book

This book probably won't help you brew a better modern day Porter.
I have read two books out of the styles series, the porter and the stout. The juxtaposition between the two is surprising. Both authors vaguely claim that their style came first. My biggest gripe about the Porter book is that he really doesn't cite anything. Other times negates information that I had never heard. He mentions at one point that a story which we have all heard (which I had never heard) about the origins of Porter is actually wrong and etc. That doesn't do much for me.In the end you are reading about a style made from malt that doesn't exist any more (brown). I don't think there is anyway to make a porter from that time so using this book to produce a BJCP porter won't be of much help.I still got some things out of it, and its relatively cheap.B

Wonderful Read.
Really good book about my favorite beer style. You get the impression Foster likes his topic, and would fun to have a pint with.

Excellent
An excellent book on the style. All the books in this series are quite good, you really can't go wrong.

A readable history
A fairly detailed history of porter, with some recipes. This is an interesting read to anyone interested in the subject: I would have liked a few more recipes, but those that are in the book seem good and there is definitely one that I will try.
