Beautiful plates, great value, well packaged.
This set of Mikasa Italian countryside 8 place setting is an excellent value, especially with the added serving platter, vegetable bowl, sugar & creamer. I also purchased this during a 20% off sale for amazon rewards card holders, so the deal was even sweeter. The dishes aren't too fussy or heavy for everyday use but elegant enough for a special occasion. They are off white/light cream. The platter is basically an oversized dinnerplate (circular); the vegetable bowl is more the style of a large cereal bowl with high sides. Sugar & creamer are pretty but small, so they only fit the intended use (couldn't use the creamer as a gravy boat for example). If anyone is hesitant about having dishes shipped, none of the dishes I received were damaged from shipping because the packaging was excellent. It came shipped in a very large, single box with one small FRAGILE sticker on it, and it looked slightly beat up from transit. However, upon opening it there was another cardboard box inside that was completely encased in bubblewrap and those air filled "bumpers". Inside this 2nd box was ANOTHER box...the actual box that you would find if buying in a store (contained a picture of the item and the Mikasa logo). Inside this final large box was three smaller boxes, 2 with 4 place settings each and one with the extra items (platter, veg. bowl, etc). All dishes were separated with corrugated cardboard squares. This is a case where a ridiculous amount of packaging seems warranted.Upon close inspection of the dishes, I did not find flaws in the coloring or cracks. The only imperfection I found on the surface of any of the dishes was a tiny (pin point) size black dot on the edge of one dinnerplate. Absolutely not a reason to exchange. Overall, I was extremely happy with this purchase!

LOVE, love
LOVE, love, love my new dinnerware set! I am just over the moon with this set. The plates are absolutely beautiful in a very simple and elegant way!. There are several reason I went with this set.First of all, the style can be very versatile! I get bored with things looking the same.Right now I am going with the rustic farmhouse style. and this dinner ware will be perfect with the vintage look. Also with the set being all white, I can mix in colored plates to get a different look. such as for holidays. I can make the table setting to look causal to very elegant with just changing the table linens and maybe glasses. The possibilities are endless!Next, I know Mikasa has been around for a long time and will continue to be. So finding replacements if something were to break will not be hard. Plus, I can buy a few extra dinner plates to have spares without having to buy a whole set. We hardly use the tea cup and saucers. Finally, I read that the plates do not get hot in the microwave like other dinnerware. Well, this is very true to my amazement. Sometime after taking a plate out of the microwave, I have been reluctant to set a plate on the counter after taking it out of the microwave because it was very hot. However, this set of Mikasa dinnerware, the plates do get warm, but not hot. I can use my hands instead of using a towel or an oven mit.Looking forward to getting more of the pieces to go with my Italian Countryside set.

Classic, elegant, and a good value
About 10 years ago I was asked to host A dinner party for Christmas. I wanted it to be classy but not too formal. Since I didn't have the money to go out and purchase a full set of fine china I needed another solution, and fast. I saw this pattern while shopping at an outlet store (which sadly is no loner there). It had just the right amount of class while still having a somewhat informal feel. I purchased a service for 8 at that time which included serving pieces. I also purchase the matching flatware. Everyone loved it, and so did I because it is dishwasher safe which made for easy cleanup. Last year we had a larger party so I purchased a second set and now have a total service for 16. The dishes were identical, but they've changed the flatware and the spoons don't match up exactly. They seem to have increased the size of the teaspoon and tablespoon. Not thrilled about the but that's for another review. If you want a beautiful set of dinnerware, but don't want want to takeout a second mortgage on your house, get these. They have a classic look that should last for generations.

Plates don't fit in any standard upper cabinet!
The set arrived in good condition as far as i can tell since i only took out the top dinner plate and tried to put it in my kitchen cabinet. All of my cabinets are standard kitchen cabinets and they clearly do not fit. WAY too big. Since all standard kitchen cabinets have outside depth of twelve inches I don't know who's cabinets they could fit in. They would only work in a corner cabinet or dish rack. I think this is a significant design flaw. I will be returning the set.

Excellent
Beautiful and durable. Better looking than Corelle brand and just as easy to clean. I highly recommend.

Excellent Set of Dishes - Worth Every Penny.
My husband and I were looking for a decent set of dishes that didn't chip or burn our hands from microwave use. After going through a couple of sets of dishes that look great but didnt hold up to everyday use, we decided to "invest" in a set of dinnerware that not only looked great but would last. We have had these for about a year now and so far, no chips and no stains and STILL a pleasure to use. Prior to purchasing this Mikasa set we experimented with several different brands of dishes by testing them in the microwave. They were all made in China and not one of them passed the ouch-burn-the-fingers test, even the brandnamed ones. After a frustrating and dissapointing search we were very happy indeed to have come across this Mikasa. It may seem expensive but considering the sets we have trashed and were probably going to trash with the cheaper stuff, its money well spent indeed.
