Q: I have a large german sheherd that stays outside,i need something to keep her cool in these hot summer days.any suggestions ?

Honestly, I have a pool (it's actually a kid's sandbox, but works great as a pool!) Ignore the ignorant comments. I also have a large white german shepherd that lives outside. We live in the country. She used to be indoors when we first got her, but within weeks of getting used to the farm, she is unwilling to stay in the house. She wants to be outdoors running around - yes, even when it's hot. So I provide a pool and refill with fresh cool water as needed. She loves it! I'm sure none of these people commenting understand that dogs used to live outside and people survived without air conditioning for a long time. As long as you provide areas that are shaded, have water available when needed, and shelter, I think you're good. I was looking at this item as well because I thought it might be an alternative to the pool. But, I read one comment saying one of these pads left the blue dye on her white dog. That can't be good.

Q: and does this need to be wet before use?

No; you do not wet the mat. It stays cool for about 40 minutes and then cools down fairly quickly when the dog leaves the mat. It does the job and has a good price.

Q: Where do I get the largest mat? What is the dimension?

We own the largest mat and it is size large and 35.4"×55". The brand of trhe mat is ARF PETS.

Q: How does it hold up to cat claws?

I have 3 cats, and they don't claw at it. Cats' claws are retractable unlike dogs' claws. I've used the cooling pad for car trips, hiking trips, vacations, in a pet backpack, and in a pet stroller in the last 2 months, and it is still holding up good. It's come in handy for our cat that tends to get hot after hiking in 70+ degree weather.
