Perfect for security system.
I’ve had my security camera system for 5 years and 1 month, I know because it says so in the settings. When I got the system I saved some money by using my old computer’s 500 gig hard drive. The drive did such a good job that I thought surveillance hard drives were a gimmick. The drive stopped working a few days ago so I needed a replacement. I hadn’t considered a used drive but these come with warranty and are so cheap depending on the size. I have 5 cameras on my system so I get about a week of recording from 500 gigs or twice that amount if I choose the ultra compression mode with slightly less quality, one week is perfect for me.The drive looks like new to me and oh boy does it make a huge difference over a regular computer drive. The differences are how super quiet it is and how cool it runs. My old drive was from a computer so I could always hear it writing or seeking data during playback. My DVR is next to my router which is in my room so I could hear it all day long, it wasn’t annoying but definitely noticeable. This drive is super quiet that you can put you ear inches away from the DVR and barely hear it.The huge advantage over the noise is how cool it runs. With my old drive I could easily feel the heat on the DVR aluminum case when touching it, this drive runs impressively cool. Running cool means that there is less heat on the motherboard which should make the DVR last longer. The drive comes un initialized which is something your surveillance system should take care off after detecting it. If the drive is installed on a computer then you need to open the disk manager to manually initialize and set up as a new drive, the computer might not show or ask you to initialize the drive automatically so nothing might show up when plugged in but it’s there.Overall the drive is a really good deal especially because it’s fully tested and comes with warranty. For surveillance systems a surveillance drive is a must and not just a gimmick if you want the best performance possible.

Good product
I bought this for a security system DVR and only had to plug it in and format it. It worked perfectly on the first try and didn't give me any problems. It's also super quiet. This is a really good product for this price point.

BOTH WD & Seagate suck.
Western Digital is supposed to be the “reliable” one compared to Seagate, and having used both I can safely say - they both suck. These things fail if you look at them the wrong way, and both of them have MAJOR reliability issues! 6 months of use or less and suddenly it’s just a brick. What’s the alternative? I’m not sure other than the “D” in a RAID for “disposable” because these things are junk and horrible for large capacity storage. What good does all that storage space do if it goes belly up shortly after purchased?! SSDs are the better alternative but they’re really expensive for large storage size, and both DVD and Blu-ray storage discs have a high rate of failure and losing some data even when handled gingerly and stored in an optimal environment.

As promised!
The WD hard drive arrived early and after i Installed it, formatted the drive according to the on screen instructions, the DVR recognized the drive immediately. So far, it's working perfectly. Thanking you in advance for your service. The drive has 0 noise level. Took me all of 10 minutes to install.Lennyinfla
