Q: I have this paired with one type r 12, where should i have the gain set so that i get the most out of my sub without blowing it?

I would set it no higher then half with the bass boost about third way up. I blew a 15" type r with the same amp wired art two ohms

Q: so it puts out more power at 2 ohms more then it does at 1 ohm?... im confused

Yeah, Alpine built this amp to be a 2 ohm amp. That's where this one puts out 1000

Q: Would this amp be a good match for my (2) 10" Audiobahn aw1000x/4ohm/dual v.c./600watts rms (each)? Any response would be greatly appreciated.

You can only wire those to 1ohm or 4ohm with both subs, so you'll only get ~600Watt instead of the 1000watt at 2ohm. It should work fine, but just not as much watt/$ as if you had a 1ohm stable amp or 2ohm load.
