Before there was "stereo" there was "telephony." The three screws are labeled above each screw as R S and T. When one looks at a stereo, 3-prong plug, one sees the Tip at the very point, then the Ring and finally the longer Sleeve. The "Sleeve" on the jack is also the mounting portion and has threads to fasten the nut onto, to hold the jack in place. When mounted onto a metal chassis (housing) it is usually grounded for safety reasons and as an electrical 'return' for components. Thus the 'S' or 'Sleeve' is the 'ground' connection.
