Just line up flight tabs with grooves in shaft and push gently

What is the secret to inserting the flights I can't even get a box cutter razor in?

Separate all 4 fins equally with fingers and push straight into slots. Mine went in very easily. Perhaps your slots were not cut properly for them to slide in. If so you have have a defective item.
