Will it fit onto my Canon EOS1000D ?

Yes fits perfectly. Although it will give you slightly more magnification and slightly less wide angle as it's made for a full frame camera.

Hi all, is this compatible with the Canon EOS 400D ?

Yes. The EOS400D will take both EF and EFS lenses. EFS lenses are optimised for APS C type sensors like the 400D, but at the time of writing the best telephoto on EFS is the EFS 55-250mm, so this EF is a good choice (on your 400D, with your crop factor, you would effectively get 120 - 480mm). There is an IS version of the EF 75-300mm lens, but this is three times the price too. I bought the lens on this page for a 300D, never regretted it.

I would probably recommend the 300mm lens with the image stabiliser, it's a bit more expensive but some long range shots in low light benefits from the IS
