As I recall, it is just beeswax and had that smell to it. To be honest, I didn't keep it for long because it put little clumps of wax on any thread drawn through it. I now use a £1 chapstick by swiping my index finger over the top and drawing the thread through that finger and thumb. Works a treat.

Q: what happens when the wax starts crumbling due to wear and tear from the thread?

So far mine hasn't crumbled , the Isco of wax rotates ensuring even wear . Sorry I'm not much help .

I would like to say that it is, but I do not like using it as it clogs up the beads and stains my thread.

Q: could you also use this on embroidery ribbons?

To be honest, I wouldn't use it on anything. It was terrible and I threw mine out as it left little wax crumbles all over the thread which then transferred to my garment. I think this would be solved by heating the wax up a bit but who has the time to do that, and how would it be done anyway? My solution is instead to use a lip chapstick (dedicated to the sewing basket) which I rub on my index finger and thumb and then run the thread through them. Works a treat but I am using polyester threat for garment sewing. Not sure how this would work for embroidery threads but worth experimenting as chapsticks are cheap.
