Q: The "button" piece of metal halfway down the back of the knife does nothing. Is it supposed to close the blade? How do I close it?

The button half way down the back of the knife is to release the blade, it is stiff, I suggest you oil it and work it a little to ease the button tension. It may take some time in doing.

Q: Big enough to filet a salmon?

Yes, depending on the size of salmon. I fish for Sockeye salmon in Alaska each year and purchased this knife to be able to store it in my chest pack when fishing. The Sockeye we catch are between 5 to 8 pounds on average and this folding Kastking Fillet knife works great. For a folding fillet knife it did better then I expected. Last fishing trip I filleted a little over 30 salmon with it, worked flawlessly..

Q: Anyone know of a leather sheath for this knife.
