Q: Ok, can I just plug in my 88 key midi controller and pretend that little toy keyboard doesn't exist?

Absolutely. It does have one midi in port. I can trigger this synth with any controller that has a midi out including my DAW.

Q: also what are those little yellow cords and do they come with the product

you connect the different modules together, often in interesting ways. For example...a sine wave oscillator can be used to make a pure tone, OR you can slow it WAY down and use the patch cord to control an audio filter to make an undulating wah-wah tone. You don't hear the sine wave, you use it to control some other function. This was Moog's original innovation and is used time and time again in modular synthesizers (and in digital ones, but the connection is less obvious when you're just adjusting parameters on a screen).

Q: Good for beginners? Does it have a sequencer and does it record?

Not good for beginners. For more advanced users who understand oscillators and such. Beginners should play around with digital DAWs before trying to purchase this at this price. I would go with keyboard synths that have the different instruments programed in them rather than trying to find the right plug recipe for a simple cymbal or snare. It does not record. It does not have a speaker. It does not connect to your computer without additional hardware.

Q: Can I connect this to a full sized keyboard and essentially run all the sounds through the synth and play them on the full sized keyboard?

Yes you can. It has MIDI IN also MIDI via USB. So you can hook any keyboard with MIDI OUT into it or to use the USB MIDI In, then you would hook both to a computer and play it that way.
