Terrence Malick's magnum opus, a visionary hymn to nature and grace, in an edition featuring a new extended cut.Four decades into an already legendary career, Terrence Malick realized his most rapturous vision to date, tracing a story of childhood, wonder, and grief to the outer limits of time and space. Reaching back to the dawn of creation, Malick sets a story of boyhood memories on a universal scale, charting the coming of age of an awestruck child (newcomer Hunter McCracken) in Texas in the 1950s, as he learns to navigate the extremes of nature and grace represented by his bitter, often tyrannical father (Brad Pitt) and his ethereal, nurturing mother (Jessica Chastain, in her breakout role). Achieved with the aid of cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and production designer Jack Fisk, the Palme d'Or-winning The Tree of Life marks the intimately personal, cosmically ambitious culmination of Malick's singular approach to filmmaking.DIRECTOR-APPROVED TWO BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Terrence Malick and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackNew extended version of the film featuring an additional fifty minutes of footageExploring "The Tree of Life," a 2011 documentary featuring collaborators and admirers of Malick's, including filmmakers David Fincher and Christopher NolanNew interviews with actor Jessica Chastain and senior visual-effects supervisor Dan GlassNew video essay by critic Benjamin B about the film's cinematography and style, featuring audio interviews with Lubezki, production designer Jack Fisk, and other crew membersNew interview with critic Alex Ross about Malick's use of classical musicVideo essay from 2011 by critic Matt Zoller Seitz and editor Serena BrambleTrailerPLUS: An essay by critic Kent Jones and a 2011 piece on the film by critic Roger Ebert

Extraordinay edition of a master work
This is the best available edition of Terrence Malick's magna opus. The detail of the packaging is excellent. The additional contents provide insights into Malick's body of work and this movie. However, being such a deep and complex work, I feel more content was needed. This edition contains both the original 2h20m (theatrical) cut (disc 1 plus extras) and the new, extended3h cut (disc 2). They have both excellent sound and image quality, as well as beautiful menu design. Both discs are region-B compatible and play correctly in my region-B player (no multiregion player is required), which is not clearly explained in the product description (Criterion editions are advertised as Region-A).

Great film, get the UK release.
Wonderful movie, I've seen many times. The criterion restoration including the extended cut is nothing short of stunning. I have the UK region 2 as I was worried that even though the US version does play fine on a UK bluray I was worried the colours may look washed out compared to the pal release..

Great edition.
Nice edition with 2 blue rays. Extended version and Cinema Version. It's a pity that it is not 4k. Some extra feature like interviews with the cast and peole involved in the film. I recommend it.

I wept like a baby.
It’s probably one of the most beautifully stunning films I’ve ever seen. I cried like a baby at the ending. I’ve never felt anything like it.
