Is this a thorium dioxide mantle?

Coleman stopped making thorium-doped mantles in the 1990s because of cumulative worker exposure, but third-party ones that fit are still available. Thorium emits low-energy alpha particles that can’t penetrate skin. Don’t breathe the dust, or the fumes during initial burn in. Wash hands after changing mantles to remove dust you otherwise might ingest. With those provisos, thorium mantles are end-user safe. The thorium mantles are reputed to burn 20% brigher. This means brighter light on full, or reduced fuel consumption for 700 lumen output. Mantles available at everybody’s favorite auction site.

Are these radioactive?

Back in the 90s and earlier these types of mantles were doped with a thorium salt which was radioactive. The activity was perfectly safe unless ingested. Those mantles emitted alpha particles which can't penetrate paper or your external skin. In the 90s, Coleman switched over to using yttrium instead, which is NOT radioactive. Yttrium mantles do not burn as bright as the thorium ones, but the mantles are little more forgiving and should last longer.

They work perfectly. I have 3 older lanterns that dont have the new fancy clips. These are the classic "tie on" style.

The quality of mantles are different grom one order to the next. Thin weave mantles are too open and cause lantern to overheat ? ?

Mine have preformed well for the last 1 1/2yrs. I have 2 lquid lanterns that i installed these on and can say they burn bright and continues. I have used 2 sets and are still in use 1 1/2yrs later buy with confidence.
